Apparel

Bill Goudelock has been named a designer for Nouveau Contemporary Goods, of Baltimore, and its design service, Whitehead Appel Design, which handles residential and commercial projects. Goudelock most recently worked for Fulmer Associates Architects in Columbia, S.C., and has worked as a freelance architectural designer and as an interior design consultant with Ethan Allen.

Architecture

Anath Ranon has been promoted to senior associate of Cho Benn Holback + Associates, a Baltimore-based architecture and planning firm. She specializes in historic restoration. Ranon was recently appointed commissioner of the Baltimore Commission on Historic and Architectural Preservation.

Awards

Jules (Sonny) Morstein Jr., third-generation owner of and an appraiser and gemologist for Morstein Jewelers, of Baltimore, will be honored March 20 at the South Baltimore Learning Center’s Masquerade Magic gala. He joined the SBLC’s Advisory Council in 1992 and has been active in the nonprofit ever since. Morstein has donated a scholarship to a SBLC graduate every year since 2001. The SBLC provides functional literacy and life skills training, and career preparation services. It also runs the Baltimore City External Diploma Program, computer skill classes, one-on-one tutoring and career counseling. Morstein has been nicknamed the “mayor of South Baltimore” for his help of individuals and organizations. He recently was re-elected president of the Federal Hill Business Association (formerly the South Baltimore Business Association) for a 23rd year. He has been president of the R.B.D.L. Umbrella Inc. for 19 years and a Baltimore City Chamber of Commerce director for 18 years. He has led other groups, including Federal Hill Main Street Inc. and the Jewelry Distributors Buying Association. Morstein received the Legends and Leaders Award from the Baltimore City Chamber of Commerce in 1997 and the Mayor’s Business Recognition Award in 1999.

Three Johns Hopkins University Press journals received awards from the Council of Editors of Learned Journals. Ralph Cohen, founding editor of New Literary History, received the Distinguished Literary Editor Award. He stepped down as editor in 2009 after 40 years of leading the journal, a major international forum for scholarly exchange. American Quarterly, the official

journal of the American Studies Association, received the award for Best Special Issue. An honorable mention for Best New Journal went to the Journal of Late Antiquity.

Clinical Trials & Surveys Corp., of Owings Mills, has been recognized as one of the fastest-growing companies of 2009 by Baltimore SmartCEO magazine. The clinical trials solutions company manages clinical trials and studies for government, university and private organizations.

The Salvation Army Howard County Family Service Center recently received a Strategic Initiatives Program grant of $30,000 from the Horizon Foundation and $7,500 from the Columbia Foundation.

Mary Ellen Vanni, executive director of Fuel Fund of Maryland for 11 years, recently completed Maryland Leadership, an eight-month leadership development program. She previously was assistant director of social concerns and parish relations for Associated Catholic Charities. Vanni is a graduate of the Notre Dame of Maryland and St. Mary’s Seminary and University. The nonprofit Fuel Fund provides year-round home energy assistance to families in Central Maryland.

Scott C. Scarfone, principal at and founder of Oasis Design Group, a landscape architecture and urban design firm in Baltimore, has graduated from Leadership Maryland. He has been president of the Maryland Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects and co-founded the Maryland Public Gardens Consortium. Oasis provides landscape architecture, master planning, and urban design to public and private clients.

Lionel Dommeler, a tobacconist with Oakleigh Beach Tobacco, of Baltimore, has qualified for membership in the International Premium Cigar Pipe Retailers Association. As a member, he has access to resources for market research, trade shows, products, services, scholarships and participation in community and legislative action programs.

Banking

W. Craig Engelhaupt has been appointed vice president and commercial relationship manager of Sandy Spring Bank, of Olney. He will be responsible for business development and portfolio growth in Howard County. Engelhaupt received his MBA from the University of Baltimore, Maryland and a bachelor’s degree from what is now Towson University.

Michael A. Muñoz has joined Howard Bank as a vice president/relationship manager in the bank’s main office in Ellicott City. He had been working in commercial lending with First Citizens Bank in Leesburg, Va., and has been a vice president at Chevy Chase Bank in Bethesda.

Mark A. Semanie has been named senior vice president/chief financial officer of Carrollton Bancorp, parent company of Carrollton Bank, of Columbia. He served as executive vice president and chief financial officer for Bay National Corp. from 2000 to 2008. Semanie is on the boards of directors of Agency Insurance Co. of Maryland and No More Stolen Childhoods, of which he is treasurer.

Boards

Patricia McHugh Lambert has been appointed to the board of directors of the Saint Agnes Foundation, of Baltimore. Lambert is an attorney with Hodes, Pessin & Katz, of Towson.

She is a published author and a featured columnist for Insurance Advisor and the National Association of Baby Boomer Women.

Mark Peck, part-owner of Annapolis-based Tatnet, of Annapolis., and Sam White, owner of Sunshine House Assisted Living, of Annapolis, have been added to the board of directors of Maryland Citizens Against Lawsuit Abuse. MDCALA is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization based in Annapolis and dedicated to educating the public about the costs and consequences of lawsuit abuse.

Jacques S. Gansler, a professor at the University of Maryland’s School of Public Policy and former high-level Pentagon official, has been appointed to the Defense Science Board, which advises the Department of Defense. He will provide independent advice on acquisition, scientific, technological and manufacturing issues. Gansler directs the school’s Center for Public Policy and Private Enterprise.

Sanford “Sandy” V. Teplitzky, a principal with the law firm Ober|Kaler, has been elected to the board of directors of Baltimore Reads, which teaches adults literacy skills necessary to function in society, achieve goals and develop individual knowledge and potential. Teplitzky chairs Ober|Kaler’s health law practice, where he represents providers in reimbursement and fraud and abuse matters. Before joining Ober|Kaler, he was with the Department of Health, Education and Welfare, where he served as counsel for the Medicare and Medicaid programs. Teplitzky is a founding fellow and former president of the American Health Lawyers Association.

Health Care

St. Joseph Medical Center, of Towson, has appointed two directors. Kathleen F. Johnson will be in charge of risk management.  She is an attorney by training with an extensive background in dealing with medical professional liability litigation and healthcare risk management.  Previously, she was in-house claims and corporate counsel for a publicly traded insurance company. Jennifer Shearer will be responsible for  health information management. She has a degree from Goucher College and attended graduate school at University of Maryland, College Park, the University of Maryland Law School and the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health. Shearer previously had her own consulting business.

Monica Aggarwal, a noninvasive cardiologist, has joined the Heart Center at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore. She was previously with Cardiovascular Specialists of Central Maryland. Aggarwal specializes in clinical cardiology, nuclear cardiology, transesophageal echocardiography and women’s health care issues. She completed her cardiology fellowship at the University of Maryland, and has served as co-director of the Women’s Heart Program at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore.

Marketing

Karen Saverino has launched Eightfold Strategy, a branding, marketing and communication firm that will  focus on social purpose clients. Most recently, she was vice president at Metropolitan Group in Washington, D.C. Saverino previously worked at Carton Donofrio Partners in Baltimore, where she led strategic communication efforts for clients in the financial services, architecture and design and consumer products categories. She is a graduate of the College of Notre Dame of Maryland.

Three new employees have been hired by gkv, a Baltimore marketing firm: Erin O’Heir, a recent graduate of the University of Maryland, College Park, joins as an assistant account executive. Kristin Schields joins the firm as an account executive. She previously was an associate with BBDO New York. Lindsay Wilson becomes a public relations account executive. She previously was an account manager at PR Newswire in Washington, D.C.

Public Relations

Gary Budd has joined Warschawski as senior associate of the Baltimore public relations, marketing and advertising agency.  He previously directed the public relations department at Baltimore-based Devaney & Associates.

Research

Gloria Jetter has been appointed vice president for Maryland of the American Cancer Society. She will lead the society’s community and volunteerism efforts for the central and western areas of the state. Jetter previously served as regional executive director for the Maryland region, and has led the society’s community and operations units in the Los Angeles area.
