Accounting
Michael I. Berman has been promoted to partner at Kahn, Berman, Solomon, Taibel & Mogol, a Timonium-based certified public accounting firm. Berman has been with the firm since 1995.
Matt Duvall has been promoted to manager at UHY Advisors Mid-Atlantic MD, of Columbia. As a member of the accounting and auditing department he provides auditing and tax services to nonprofit organizations, professional services firms and real estate companies. Duvall earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Maryland.
Awards
TeleCommunication Systems Inc., of Annapolis, received the 2009 Satellite Product of the Year Award from TMCnet.com for two of its SwiftLink products, the flyaway Satellite Access Baseband Remote 2.4M Quad-Band VSAT Terminal and the Stingray 45-X Ultra Small Aperture Terminal, which can be carried in a backpack. The SwiftLink deployable communications suite provides battle-tested Secret Internet Protocol Router and Nonsecure Internet Protocol Router connectivity and is designed using an Everything-Over-IP architecture to provide seamless, secure interoperable communications in remote combat locations.
Community College of Baltimore County recently granted 10 students associate degrees from its massage therapy program. These students are eligible to sit for national certification and Maryland licensure examinations: Paul Blair, Aberdeen; Amanda Metz, Forest Hill; Jonathan Henry and Cassidy Reeves, Perry Hall; Beth Gillespie, Nottingham; Kimberly Jones and April Panzer, Middle River; Karen Zeitlin, Arlington; Tina McClellan, Northwood; and Diana Degnan-Lafon, Towson. Theresa Pac-Marshall was honored as the program’s Instructor of the Year.
Margaret “Terri” O’Connell, a former teacher at Mayfield Woods Middle School in Howard County, has received the Maryland History Day Teacher of the Year Award. Six students won awards in the Maryland History Day competition, sponsored by the Maryland Humanities Council: Faith Chung, Patuxent Valley Middle School, Howard County, finalist; Ryan Burton, Milton Somers Middle School, Charles County, Outstanding State Entry; Alanna Natanson, Eastern Middle School, Montgomery County, finalist; Christopher Perdue, home school student, Derwood, finalist; Nathan Rehr, Baltimore Polytechnic Institute graduate and now a freshman at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, Outstanding State Entry Award; Lauren White, Huntingtown High School, Calvert County, finalist. The Maryland Humanities Council is an educational, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization affiliated with the National Endowment for the Humanities. Its purpose is to stimulate and promote informed dialogue and civic engagement.
Perfect Networker, of Elkridge, has been named Networking Group of the Year by Beltway Networking. Perfect Networker is an open online network on which members can connect with others, share ideas, refer business and generate support for a project. Beltway Networking is a free Web site that serves as a clearinghouse where Mid-Atlantic networking groups can post their events and access free resources.
Boards
Michael Sullivan, a senior vice president at the Baltimore office of CB Richard Ellis, and Christopher Levesque, program manager with Insight Information Technology, have been named to the board of directors of The Arc of Baltimore. Sullivan has represented corporate clients in commercial real estate for more than 14 years. Levesque manages the primary portfolio, program, and project management system at Fort Meade. The Arc of Baltimore supports more than 3,000 Baltimore-area residents with developmental disabilities and their families.
Heidi Fletcher, vice president for enrollment management at College of Notre Dame of Maryland, has been elected to the board of Multinational Development of Women in Technology. The organization was founded in Baltimore in 2007 to accelerate growth in the global knowledge economy.
Communications
ADG Creative, of Columbia, has hired four staff members: Account executive Jessica Brown previously worked at the Cyphers Agency and Kaiser Associates. She is a graduate of Loyola University Maryland. Designer Christina Bittinger previously worked at Frank Strategic Marketing. She is a graduate of Stevenson University. Senior database engineer Judy Bruns previously worked at BSC Consulting. She has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County and a master’s degree from Johns Hopkins University. IT director Binh Duong has worked throughout the Baltimore-Washington region. He has a degree from the University of Maryland. ADG focuses on strategic planning, marketing, advertising, interactive media production, web design and development, e-learning products, publication and graphic design, video production and software development.
MGH, of Baltimore, has promoted six employees: Ryan Goff, vice president and word of mouth/social media director; Kerry O’Neill, public relations account director; Nick Kelly, public relations senior account executive; Zane Kolnick, web developer; Tim Crider, systems architect; and Lauren Hoffman, copywriter. MGH offers advertising, public relations, media planning and buying, creative design and production, market research, direct response relationship marketing, word of mouth/social media marketing, and interactive design, development and marketing.
Consulting
Kiesha Haughton Smoots has been named director of the Central Region for the Maryland Small Business Development Center, at Towson University. She previously was a counselor and trainer at Women Entrepreneurs of Baltimore and has run her own consulting company. Smoots has a bachelor’s degree and an MBA from the University of Maryland. The MDSBDC is part of a national network provides confidential management consulting and technical assistance programs at no cost to small businesses.
Billy Frishman has been hired by First Finish, of Columbia, as an OSHA-certified site superintendent to manage renovation projects. Frishman received his Class A Contractor’s license as proprietor of BGB Builder. He has held executive-level positions at Grace Development and Bison Building Co. First Finish provides construction services for market segments including: commercial, government and those specific to the hotel and lodging industry.
Grants
The Maryland Humanities Council has received an $80,000 grant from the Boeing Charitable Trust to lead a three-state effort to develop effective means of holding civil discourse about important civic issues. The program, “Practicing Democracy: Seeking Common Ground,” will gather people with different opinions and ideological approaches for a series of public discussion forums that will strive to produce real and respectful debate. In 2010, discussion forums will focus on the environment, sustainability, development and transportation.
The Comcast Foundation has awarded a $25,000 grant to the Maryland Humanities Council to support its One Maryland One Book program in 2010. The program improves literacy by bringing reading and discussion programs to youth and adults in Maryland communities.
Investing
Michael Riley has been hired as a financial service coordinator by the Prosperity Consulting Group, a registered investment advisory firm in Owings Mills. He previously worked as a 401(k) plan consultant at CDM Retirement Consultants. Riley is a Towson University graduate.
Nonprofits
Jonathan W. Landers has been appointed executive director of the National Museum of Dentistry, on the University of Maryland, Baltimore campus. He previously was managing principal of marketing for Museums Consulting. Before that he specialized in the cultural attractions consulting practice at Economics Research Associates, and served as deputy director at the Experience Music Project in Seattle and vice president of marketing and new business development for the National Geographic Society. The museum, an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution, celebrates the history of the dental profession and educates the public about the importance of good oral health.
Public Relations
Gary Budd has joined Warschawski as senior associate of the Baltimore public relations, marketing and advertising agency. He previously directed the public relations department at Baltimore-based Devaney & Associates.
Research
Gloria Jetter has been appointed vice president for Maryland of the American Cancer Society. She will lead the society’s community and volunteerism efforts for the central and western areas of the state. Jetter previously served as regional executive director for the Maryland region, and has led the society’s community and operations units in the Los Angeles area.
Robert E. Kaplan has been appointed chief information officer of Clinical Trials & Surveys Corp., of Owings Mills. He will be the head of information technology and oversee the development of C-TASC’s clinical trial management system software. Kaplan previously served as vice president of information systems and CIO of the Iowa Foundation for Medical Care. Before that he was vice president and CIO of the National Committee for Quality Assurance and CIO of WebMD. He performed his administrative residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital.
Restaurants
Mark Knipp, a former chef de partie at The Inn at Little Washington and most recently the executive sous chef at Wheatleigh in Lenox, Mass., has been appointed executive chef at the Peacock Restaurant & Lounge at the Inn at 202 Dover, in Easton.
