Awards
Stephen B. Baylin, the Virginia and D.K. Ludwig Professor for Cancer Research at the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins, has been awarded the 14th Alfred G. Knudson Award in Cancer Genetics from the National Cancer Institute. He and his lab team pinpointed a role for key cancer-causing gene mutations and also for abnormalities in cells’ DNA and the environment directly surrounding genes in the cell nucleus.
St. John Properties, of Baltimore, has received the Maryland Chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council’s Green Transformation Award for its efforts in Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) building designs and systems in commercial real estate.
Sue F. Ward, grassroots director of the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare, was honored recently as the 2010 Champion for Seniors at the United Seniors of Maryland’s 33rd Annual Legislative Rally. Ward was the first secretary of Maryland’s Department of Aging. Before that she was director of family services and director of the Department of Aging for Prince George’s County. She is a former president of the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging and the National Association of State Units on Aging. She is also a former commissioner of the American
Bar Association Commission on Legal Problems of the Elderly. United Seniors of Maryland is a coalition that lobbies for individuals and organizations whose purpose is to preserve and enhance the mental, physical, and financial well being of Maryland seniors.
Jean Tansey, president of the Maryland Recreation and Parks Association and chief of capital planning and development for the Baltimore County Department of Recreation and Parks, submitted the winning slogan in Adler Display’s nationwide Business is Back slogan contest. Tansey’s slogan was “Welcome in Year 2010 … Happy Days are Here Again!” Adler Display, of Baltimore, creates trade show displays, custom displays, graphics and signage. Its contest is part of a yearlong effort to foster optimism for business.
Banking
William J. Pasenelli has been named president of Community Bank of Tri-County, a subsidiary of Tri-County Financial Corp., of Waldorf, effective March 31. He succeeds Michael Middleton, who will remain chairman and CEO of the bank, and chairman, CEO and president of Tri-County Financial. Pasenelli had been executive vice president and chief financial officer of the bank, which has 10 branches in southern Maryland.
Perry M. Watts Jr. has been promoted to assistant manager at Howard Bank’s Maple Lawn branch. He joined the bank in 2007 as a personal banker. Watts has participated in numerous professional development programs, including the American Bankers Association’s Principles of Banking course.
Boards
Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Baltimore has added board members: Julie Buffington, an attorney with the government; Mary Beth Ewen, an associate with Kramon & Graham; Dana Stewart Johns, associate, Camden Partners Holdings; Jessica Baker, business architect, Smart Grid–BGE; Anne Hoffman, clinical social work supervisor with Kennedy Krieger Institute; Trish Kirby, innovator, Kirby Innovations; and Jo Krause, retired educator, Baltimore County Public Schools. CASA is a nonprofit that recruits, trains and supervises community volunteers who lend support to and advocate for Baltimore’s abused and neglected children.
William A. LaPlante, head of the Global Engagement Department at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, has been named to the Defense Science Board. The federal panel advises Defense Department leaders on scientific, technical, research and other critical matters.
Contracting
First Finish, of Columbia, has added four staff members: Jeff Shaheen has joined as a program manager for its federal government division; Bruce Cranford is a project manager whose responsibilities will include overseeing hospitality renovation projects, maintaining quality control, high-level customer service, and subcontractor relations; Christina Pitts is a project coordinator responsible for bid assistance, job set-up and closeout, vendor negotiation, freight management, and product tracking; Tom McCoy is an estimator responsible for commercial construction projects.
Education
Kevin J. Manning, president of Stevenson University, has contributed a chapter to a new book on the effects of technology on higher education. His chapter, “Doing More with Less: Transforming a Program through Technology,” appears in “President to President: Views on Technology in Higher Education, Volume II,” published by SunGard Higher Education and the Council of Independent Colleges.
Health Care
Harold (Hal) J. Tucker has been chosen to serve as Greater Baltimore Medical Center’s chief of staff. The gastroenterologist has been a member of the GBMC medical staff since 1981; he most recently served as vice chief of staff. Tucker replaced John Saunders Jr., who is serving as GBMC’s interim CEO. Saunders has also been appointed to a new position of vice president for clinical effectiveness and patient safety, and will continue to serve as the medical director of the Milton J. Dance Jr. Head & Neck Center.
Ziv J Haskal, professor of radiology and surgery at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and vice chair of strategic development and chief of vascular and interventional radiology, image-guided therapy and interventional oncology at the University of Maryland Medical Center, in Baltimore, has been named editor of the Society of Interventional Radiology’s flagship publication, the Journal of Vascular and Interventional Radiology, for a five-year term beginning January 2011.
Gary L. Rosner has been appointed professor of oncology and director of the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins’s Quantitative Sciences Program and Biostatistics/Bioinformatics Division. He previously held faculty appointments at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center and the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at the University of Texas Health Science Center-Houston. He also holds adjunct appointments with Rice University and the Duke University Medical Center.
Robert Marshall has joined Concentra as its area sales manager covering Maryland, Washington, D.C., and Virginia. He previously served as director of business development for the Better Business Bureau of Greater Maryland. Concentra provides urgent care, occupational medicine, and workers’ compensation management at more than 320 medical centers in 41 states.
Lynn Bushman Greenberg has been appointed chief of nutrition and food services of the VA Maryland Health Care System. Greenberg, who had served as site manager for the Baltimore VA Medical Center and the Loch Raven VA Rehabilitation & Community Living Center, has worked for the VA Maryland Health Care System for 35 years, beginning in as a clinical dietitian.
Marketing
Steve Stewart has been promoted from director of marketing to vice president of marketing and public relations at Carroll Lutheran Village, of Westminster. Before joining the residential community in 2003 Stewart was general manager of the Belk department store in Westminster.
Warschawski, of Baltimore, has hired Jordan Bishop and Franzannie Guiteau as junior associates. Bishop previously was an athletic communications assistant at Loyola University Maryland. Guiteau interned for Capstrat, where she created press materials for clients in the health care industry.
Mike Gabriele has joined LederMark Communications, of Towson, as marketing communications director. His career has included management roles in creative communications at The Baltimore Sun and Baltimore Examiner. LederMark Communications is a marketing strategy and communications firm serving the financial services industry.
Planit, a Baltimore-based marketing communications agency, recently added five staff members: Jason Wennet, senior copywriter; Angie Gentile, interactive producer; Boris Brodsky, senior web developer; Bonnie Schilling, director of new business development; and Erin Barry, assistant account executive.
Nonprofits
Patricia Banks has joined the American Urological Association to direct its marketing and communications. She previously served as vice president of marketing at FactorHealth Alliance. The association is an educational nonprofit organization based in Linthicum.
Real Estate
Andrew M. Roud has been hired as development director for St. John Properties’ Southern Division, responsible for properties in Anne Arundel, Howard, Prince George’s and St. Mary’s counties. He was previously managing director-MDG Europe at McMahon Development Group in Washington, D.C. St. John Properties is a full-service commercial real estate firm based in Baltimore.
Yachting
Greg Kaufman has been hired as a sales representative of Kadey-Krogen Yachts’ Annapolis team. He is a former owner and president of Fawcett Boat Supplies, which was sold in 2005. Since then Kaufman had worked as a yacht broker with Martin Bird and Associates.
