Accounting

Dori E. Perry has joined KatzAbosch, of Timonium, as director of governmental contracting. She previously served as deputy comptroller of the Military Sealift Command, as senior manager for Cotton & Co. at the federal Drug Enforcement Administration, and at the Department of State, where she was responsible for financial advisory services.  Perry also worked at the White House on the National Performance Review and has had key roles at the Federal Trade Commission and Federal Highway Administration.

James L. Fleshman III, a tax accountant at Gorfine, Schiller and Gardyn, of Owings Mills, has been selected to the inaugural class of Business Volunteers Unlimited Maryland’s Getting Involved with Volunteer Experience program. The initiative introduces young professionals to improving their communities through volunteerism and leadership. They will spend the next two years learning about issues facing the community and developing civic leadership skills, leading to a volunteer leadership position with a local nonprofit organization.

Brad Lebow has been promoted from chief operating officer to president of Horich Parks, of Hunt Valley. Chip Hector becomes chief operating officer, and Jon Parks becomes executive vice president. The marketing and advertising agency is dedicated exclusively to the furniture industry.

Architecture

SHW Group has hired Lisa Julian-Miller and Steve Corkill to lead a team in the firm’s new Baltimore office to serve K-12 and higher-education clients. Corkill, the senior manager and vice president, has held project manager, associate and senior associate positions at other design companies. Julian-Miller, the vice president of business development, has 30 years of experience in the mid-Atlantic design and construction industry. She is a past president of the Chesapeake chapter of the Society for Marketing Professional Services.

Awards

Stephen M. Shiloh, CEO of Maryland Correctional Enterprises, has received the Rodli Award for years of contributions to the field from the National Correctional Industries Association. MCE employs more than 2,000 inmates whose work includes restoration of the environment and production of furniture, textiles, printing, license plates, signs and food, in additional to charitable efforts.

The Greater Baltimore Medical Center’s Marketing Department recently received six Alfred Knight Awards from the Maryland Society for Health Care Strategy and Market Development, the state’s premier organization for professionals working in health care strategy and market development. The awards were for internal communications, media placement, newsletters, and GBMC’s website.

Walter Hettinger, an emergency medicine physician at Greater Baltimore Medical Center, recently received two awards from Gov. Martin O’Malley for his work with the Maryland Defense Force. Hettinger received the Maryland Commendation Medal for his work as the force protection officer in charge when he obtained vaccines and supplies, including some from GBMC, for an earthquake relief mission to Haiti. He also received a Maryland Meritorious Service Award for work with the National Guard OCS encampment last August.

The Hyatt Regency Baltimore recently received the Mayor’s Business Recognition Award Business Recognition Award from the Greater Baltimore Committee for the hotel’s Family of Responsible and Caring Employees program, a community outreach initiative. Also, at the 11th Annual Minority Business Summit, the hotel received the Diversity Trailblazer Award from the Visionary Marketing Group, a national leader in the promotion of diversity and inclusion, for programs that train women and minorities for careers in the hospitality industry.

Planit, a Baltimore-based marketing communications agency, has received $10,000 for winning third place in the Administaff $100,000 Business Sweepstakes. Administaff provides human resources services for small and medium-sized businesses. Planit was selected from among businesses in 45 states and the District of Columbia.

Atradius Credit Insurance, of Hunt Valley, was recently named to World Finance magazine’s 100 list, which honors companies from diverse industries and their 2009 business achievements. The magazine recognized Atradius for “proving its value to the business community” by swiftly settling valid insurance claims and helping clients avoid payment defaults.

Cynthia Swisher, chief financial officer of East Baltimore Development Inc., has received a Baltimore “SmartCFO” award in SmartCEO magazine’s Profiles of Financial Excellence. Before joining EBDI, which is creating a mixed-income community for families, businesses and public institutions, she served as senior director of finance for Struever Bros., Eccles & Rouse. Swisher has an MBA from Loyola University Maryland and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland, College Park.

Banking

Sandy Spring Bank, based in Olney, has appointed Bernard Stehle, Michael Irwin and Denise Kratz as vice presidents of its Chesapeake Region Commercial Banking Team. Stehle will also be commercial relationship manager; he is a graduate of the University of Maryland. Irwin, a CPA, will be responsible for managing commercial portfolios; he is a graduate of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. Kratz will also be commercial portfolio manager; she is a graduate of Loyola College Maryland.

Boards

Susan Gorham has been elected to the board of directors of the YMCA of York and York County’s Southern Branch. She is the director of marketing at Gross, Mendelsohn & Associates, a CPA and consulting firm, of Baltimore. Gorham also serves on the board of directors of New Freedom Heritage.

Education

Adam Gross, principal of Ayers Saint Gross Architects + Planners, of Baltimore, has been appointed as the Kea Distinguished Professor for the Spring Lecture Series at the University of Maryland’s School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation. He is teaching within the Graduate School’s Senior Thesis Program.

Denise Seigart has been appointed associate dean for nursing education at Stevenson University. Seigart, who has 29 years of experience in nursing practice, nursing education, and academic administration, will start July 15. She previously was a professor of nursing at Mansfield University of Pennsylvania. She received a Pennsylvania Canadian Studies Consortium Research Award and a Pennsylvania State System Diversity Grant for the development of a summer leadership academy for minority youth to foster confidence, academic skills, and career exploration.

Finance

Fred C.C. (Corky) Crozier has been hired by Deutsche Bank Alex. Brown as a managing director and client advisor in its Baltimore office. Crozier is rejoining the firm from Morgan Stanley Smith Barney, where he was a managing director and the district director for Maryland and Washington, D.C.

Tom Iler has been appointed chief information officer of Ascend One, of Columbia. He previously served as senior vice president and chief information officer of Platform-A. Iler holds a bachelor’s degree from Loyola College and an MBA from the University of Baltimore. He serves on Towson University’s College of Business and Economics Advisory Board.

Kolina K. Vortman has been hired as director of field development of The Washington Group, a general agency of MassMutual, headquartered in Bethesda. She will be responsible for recruiting financial services professionals. The Washington Group provides financial planning, insurance and investments.

Government

Cortney Fisher has been appointed director of the Criminal Injuries Compensation Board of the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services. The agency annually disburses millions of dollars to help victims of crime pay their expenses. Fisher most recently managed the Office of Victim Services for the state Division of Parole and Probation. She is past president of the Maryland Coalition Against Sexual Assault and an adjunct faculty member at the University of Maryland College Park. She is also a consultant with the federal Office for Victims of Crime Training and Technical Assistance Center.

Health Care

Lauren Richter, a primary care physician and licensed acupuncturist, has been promoted to assistant medical director of the University of Maryland, Center for Integrative Medicine Clinic. She will oversee the clinic’s medical services and its planning. Before joining the clinic in 2008 Richter had a practiced family medicine for 24 years.

Wanda Lessner, director of executive inquiry of CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield, takes seriously her responsibility as president of the board of the National Kidney Foundation of Maryland. The former nurse will be among those to climb down the 25-story Legg Mason Tower in Baltimore during the Rappel for Kidney Health. Anyone who raises $1,000 qualifies for the June 19 event. Matthew Cooper, associate professor of surgery and director of kidney transplantation and clinical research at the University of Maryland School of Medicine Division of Transplantation, will be among the rappellers. Marketing

Nick Dryfuse has been appointed vice president, technology solutions, of Merkle, and will work in the Columbia headquarters of the marketing services provider. He previously worked with consulting firm Capgemini for nearly 10 years.

Publishing

Greg Hanscom, the senior editor of Urbanite magazine since 2007, has been promoted to editor-in-chief. He replaces David Dudley, who will serve as an editor-at-large of the Baltimore-based monthly while joining AARP The Magazine as an editor.

Real Estate

Shirley Matlock, of RE/MAX Advantage Realty, in Columbia, has been awarded the National Association of Realtors’ Green Designation after completing coursework on green homes and buildings and issues of sustainability in relation to real estate.

John Nemeyer has joined Evers & Co. Real Estate, where he will focus on residential transactions in Maryland and Washington, D.C., and assist with commercial real estate.
