Awards
Yolanda Copeland, senior vice president of patient services and chief nursing officer at Saint Agnes Hospital, of Baltimore, recently received the 2010 Nursing Spectrum Excellence Award in the category of Advancing & Leading the Profession for the DC/MD/VA region. She will compete with regional winners from across the country for the national Nurse of the Year Awards in the fall. Copeland, a nurse for more than 30 years, has brought cohesion and professionalism to the nursing department, hospital officials say. Saint Agnes nurses now participate on many interdisciplinary committees, councils and work groups, and have begun a three-year process to earn the American Nurses Credentialing Center Magnet Status.
Catherine Miller, clinical educator for Howard County General Hospital’s intensive care and special care units, is the regional winner of the Nursing Spectrum Excellence Award for Teaching. She will go on to the national competition in the fall. Miller, a nurse since 1984 and on staff at HCGH for 20 years, became the educational manager for the ICU in 2002. Also, Ellen Merrill was one of five finalists in the Clinical Care category of the Nursing Spectrum Excellence Awards.
The Eastport Yacht Club Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the Eastport Yacht Club, recently awarded the first Maritime Skills Training scholarship to Leif Carlsson, a graduate of Broadneck High School. Carlsson, who attended the Anne Arundel County public school system’s Marine Repair Technology program at Center of Applied Technology-South, will attend the New England Institute of Technology’s marine trades program in Warwick, R.I.
The SignGuru application of GableSigns, of Baltimore, was named Best New Product by the Society for Environmental Graphic Designers at its national conference last month. SignGuru is an application, fully functional on the Apple iPhone, iTouch and iPod, that assists with the specification, design, and construction of signs and graphics.
Crosby Marketing Communications, of Annapolis and Washington, D.C., received 11 Best in Maryland Awards recently from the Maryland Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America. The company provides integrated advertising, public relations, direct-response and interactive services to regional and national market leaders in a variety of industries.
Chris H. Runde, chairman of the Maryland State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners, recently received the Maryland Veterinary Medical Association’s 2010 Distinguished Veterinarian Award for his leadership, dedication and commitment to the veterinary profession. In 2003, Runde was appointed to the board of veterinary medical examiners and in 2004 he was elected its president. From 1985 to 1987, he worked as an associate veterinarian at Squire Veterinary Clinic in Upper Marlboro. In 1987 Runde co-purchased Tidewater Veterinary Hospital in Charlotte Hall. The MVMA also honored the previous chairman of the board of veterinary medical examiners, John P. O’Mara, with the Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award.
Darryl A. Stokes, vice president of engineering and standards for Baltimore Gas and Electric Co., received a Ray of Hope Award on June 19 from Black Professional Men Inc., a nonprofit organization created to address social, economic and political issues affecting the African-American community, with a focus on the African-American male. Stokes graduated from Baltimore Polytechnic Institute before earning bachelor’s and master’s degree in engineering. He has been with BGE for 28 years, beginning as a summer student while pursuing his undergraduate degree. Stokes now leads an organization within BGE responsible for the development and maintenance of major construction standards and work procedures, procurement of major electrical and gas transmission and distribution equipment, and adherence to federal, state and local regulations. As BGE’s chief engineer, he is the primary liaison to Maryland Public Service Commission.
The marketing department of THE ASSOCIATED: Jewish Community Federation of Baltimore was recently awarded a Marketing Excellence Award in the nonprofit category from the Baltimore chapter of the American Marketing Association. The award is for a 2009 campaign, Days of Decision, which was designed to increase visibility and understanding about the struggles of individuals in the Jewish community.
Peter and Beth Rosenwald, along with their sons, Andrew and Jacob Rosenwald, received the Dorsey Family Service Award on June 15 from the American Red Cross of Central Maryland. Peter Rosenwald is a member at Gordon Feinblatt; he has served on the Red Cross board of directors since 2002, the past two years as chairman. Beth Rosenwald is senior vice president of Legg Mason/Smith Barney; she was one of the first members of the Red Cross Tiffany Circle, a group of women philanthropists supporting the organization’s humanitarian mission. Andrew Rosenwald was the top fundraiser for the Red Cross Measles Campaign, a program to eradicate the child-killing disease in developing countries. Jacob Rosenwald is serving as a summer intern with the American Red Cross International Service in Washington, D.C.; he has been a volunteer at the Red Cross Holocaust and War Victims Tracing Center.
Sr. Rita Thomas, of Bon Secours, in Marriottsville, received the Catholic Health Association’s 2010 Lifetime Achievement Award at the association’s Catholic Health Assembly in Denver June 13 to 15 in recognition of her accomplishments over five decades to strengthen the Catholic health ministry. She served as CEO and board president of several local facilities after beginning her health care career as a registered professional nurse. In 1973, Sr. Rita was elected provincial of the U.S. Province of the Sisters of Bon Secours. During her six years in that position, she established the national position of health care coordinator and convened all of the Bon Secours facility CEOs to form the Bon Secours Health Care Commission, laying the foundation for the Bon Secours Health System. She served as chairperson of the Bon Secours Health System board from 1994 to 1996.
Bowhead Science and Technology has received the Susquehanna Workforce Leadership Award for innovative workplace strategies that improve workers’ skills and workplace quality. The award includes a $1,000 training certificate to Harford Community College. In April, Bowhead launched an online training tool through which employees can pursue a variety of professional development opportunities. The company is a subsidiary of Bowhead Technical and Professional Services Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Alaska Native corporation Ukpeaġvik Iñupiat Corp. of Barrow, Alaska.
The Doctors Community Hospital Center for Wound Healing, in Lanham, was awarded the Front Runner Award by the National Healing Corp., and the center’s medical director, Dr. Chester DiLallo, was one of four finalists for medical director of the year. The center, which opened in June 2008, was recognized for maximizing its resources to meet the growing needs of the community. It specializes treating diabetic foot ulcers, pressure ulcers, infections, compromised skin grafts and flaps, and wounds that have not healed within 30 days. Doctors Community Hospital is a 186-bed acute care medical and surgical hospital.
Encore Path Inc., a Baltimore company that makes devices for recovery from stroke and brain injury, won a Stevie Award for Best New Product or Service of the Year for its Tailwind rehabilitation device in The 2010 American Business Awards on June 21. The Tailwind helps stroke and brain injury survivors with paralysis recover their arm movement and regain their independence.
Banking
William Sherman has joined Baltimore County Savings Bank as vice president of commercial lending. He previously served as senior vice president and chief lending officer at Carrollton Bank after being promoted from vice president and commercial real estate team leader. Sherman received a bachelor’s degree in finance from the University of Baltimore.
Boards
The Maryland Economic Development Association has elected its 2010-2011 board of directors. president: David S. Iannucci, executive director, Baltimore County Department of Economic Development; vice president: Laureen M. Boyer, executive director, Frederick County Office of Economic Development; secretary: Lawrence F. Twele, director, Carroll County Department of Economic Development; treasurer: Sean M. Looney, Comcast’s vice president of state government affairs. Newly chosen to the board were: John R. Devine, principal, Miles & Stockbridge; Keasha N. Haythe, director, Dorchester County Economic Development; and John Henry King, economic development director for Bowie.
Leonard B. Rus, a CPA and tax partner at Gross, Mendelsohn & Associates, of Baltimore, recently was elected to the school board of Beth Israel Congregation, of Owings Mills. Rus received a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Loyola University Maryland and a master’s degree in taxation from the University of Baltimore. Gross Mendelsohn is a full-service CPA and consulting firm.
Kathy Smith has been elected board chair of Community Health Charities of Maryland. She is the executive director of United Marriage Encounter and Marriage Encounter Support Foundation, an international, interdenominational Christian marriage ministry. Smith is founder and principal of Smith Associates. She holds a bachelor’s degree from the College of Notre Dame and a master’s from Johns Hopkins University. Ron Brown, director of corporate relations and major gifts for Towson University, was elected vice chair.
Construction
Tom Mawhinney has been rehired by Cianbro to serve as a senior project engineer based in Baltimore. He will undertake the Big Slackwater Rehabilitation in Hagerstown for the National Park Service, a rehabilitation of the C&O Canal. Cianbro is an employee-owned general contractor that provides construction and service solutions throughout North America.
Government
Philip Burdette has been named federal security director for Baltimore Washington International/Thurgood Marshall Airport by the federal Transportation Security Administration. Burdette will be responsible for handling day-to-day operations of BWI as well as managing overall security of the airport. He became deputy federal security director in November 2008 and has been acting federal security director since February. In 2006, Burdette was recognized as the TSA’s Employee of the Year and received the Department of Homeland Security’s Award for Excellence for establishing an interagency security program targeting known vulnerabilities across transportation modes. Before joining the TSA, Burdette served in the U.S. Marine Corps and was a counterintelligence investigator at the National Security Agency at Fort Meade.
Health Care
Dr. Ursula McClymont, a Baltimore Medical System physician, is one of eight individuals selected for the Practice Change Fellows program aimed at building leadership capacity among physicians, nurses and social workers who have operational responsibility for geriatric care. This national program awards $90,000 and the support of local and national mentors to help fellows develop a new service or aging program in their community. McClymont practices geriatric and family medicine and is the director of Baltimore Medical System’s Orleans Square facility in East Baltimore.
Marketing
ADG|Creative, of Columbia, has added four staff members: multimedia developer Jonathan Rossway previously developed Rich Internet Applications for SAP in Philadelphia; Kara Mason comes to the firm as a graphic designer after an internship at Type Image Form in Philadelphia; David Handermann previously designed and developed software capabilities and applications at Omen Inc.; Brandon Antkowiak, a former ADG intern, will support the web development, briefing, and broadcast/motion team.
Residential
Cindy Wolf has been appointed director of marketing and sales at North Oaks, a senior living community in Pikesville. She previously was marketing director for the Fox Hill Senior Living Community and for Atrium Village. Wolf has a bachelor’s degree from Loyola College of Maryland.
Christopher Kiefer has been promoted to team leader of the community management team in the Silver Spring office of Legum & Norman. Kiefer joined Legum & Norman as a community manager in 2006. The company’s other regional offices include one on the Maryland shore. Community association management is Legum & Norman’s main focus.
