Accounting

Clifton Gunderson, a certified public accounting and consulting firm, has promoted James T. Paulk, Joel Eshleman and Greg Bara to senior managers in its Timonium office. Paulk, who has nearly 11 years of public accounting experience, specializes in providing tax services to clients operating in a variety of industries. Eshleman, who has 10 years of experience, specializes in providing information technology internal control reviews and systems audits. Bara, who has more than 12 years of experience, provides audit and accounting services to local government entities, construction companies and not-for-profit organizations.

Akinyemi (Yemi) Oteyowo has joined Pinnacle Communications, of Baltimore, as a Web developer. Oteyowo previously worked as a Web developer for Canton Group. At Pinnacle, he will develop and program websites for its clients.

Awards

Charles Robinson, a reporter and associate producer for Maryland Public Television, recently received the Media/Communications Award at Black Professional Men of Baltimore’s 17th annual Rays of Hope Awards and Scholarship Breakfast. Robinson has worked in television as a reporter and national correspondent, in radio as news director, political analyst and executive producer, and in print as editor-in-chief of The Sphinx magazine.

Six Southern Maryland businesses and executives received Leading Edge Awards on June 23 at the College of Southern Maryland’s 10th annual event, which recognized individuals and businesses that spur economic growth within the region. The winners were: Brianna Bowling of Zekiah Technologies, CEO of the year; Asbury-Solomons Island, Calvert County business of the year; Facchina Global Services, Charles County technology company of the year; Technology Security Associates, Patuxent Partnership member firm of the year; Briscoe-Tonic Funeral Home, Small Business of the Year; and Naval Air Systems Command, College of Southern Maryland’s Partnership in Education Award.

Audrey Trapp, talent management consultant for Johns Hopkins University, received the 2010 Joseph Forni Award from Community Health Charities of Maryland at the organization’s annual meeting. This award is presented to the individual who best exemplifies the values and principles of CHCMD through service. St. Elizabeth School, in Baltimore, received the Volunteer of the Year Award for the school’s commitment to volunteering with CHCMD throughout 2009. The American Breast Cancer Foundation received the Agency of the Year Award for its participation in the Step Up and PROSPAR programs, which are intended to increase designations to CHCMD’s member organizations. CHCMD President and CEO Wayne Horrell presented the foundation with a check for $1,000.

Monica McManus, chief information officer of Lockheed Martin’s Information Systems & Global Solutions division, recently received the Multinational Development of Women in Technology’s first Diversity in Technology Leadership Award. McManus leads IT strategy, implementation and support for her division’s global employees. Her team oversees a worldwide IT network that drives a wide range of operations. She was previously vice president, engineering for the Security Division within IS&GS. McManus serves on the division’s diversity steering committee, is a board member for community outreach nonprofits, and mentors young professionals across the corporation. The Multinational Development of Women in Technology was founded as a nonprofit organization in 2007 to accelerate growth in the global knowledge economy.

The Baltimore County Chamber of Commerce awarded the Ed St. John Volunteer of the Year Award to Cliff Ishmael, president of Strategic H.R. and chairman of the chamber’s legislative committee, at its Annual Awards ceremony in June. The chamber awarded Merit Scholarship Awards to three students who recently graduated from Baltimore County public schools: Jonathan Comer received a two-year scholarship to the Community College of Baltimore County, while four-year scholarships were awarded to Megan Kellner for the University of Maryland, Baltimore County and Ivana Djukic for Towson University.

Boards

Leonard B. Rus, a CPA and tax partner at Gross, Mendelsohn & Associates, of Baltimore, recently was elected to the school board of Beth Israel Congregation, of Owings Mills. Rus received a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Loyola University Maryland and a master’s degree in taxation from the University of Baltimore. Gross Mendelsohn is a full-service CPA and consulting firm.

Kathy Smith has been elected board chair of Community Health Charities of Maryland. She is the executive director of United Marriage Encounter and Marriage Encounter Support Foundation, an international, interdenominational Christian marriage ministry. Smith is founder and principal of Smith Associates. She holds a bachelor’s degree from the College of Notre Dame and a master’s from Johns Hopkins University. Ron Brown, director of corporate relations and major gifts for Towson University, was elected vice chair.

Gloria Berthold Larkin, president of Marketing Outsource Associates, and its division, TargetGov, has been appointed to the board of directors of Women Impacting Public Policy, a national nonprofit, nonpartisan public policy organization that advocates on behalf of women in business. TargetGov focuses on government procurement, related business development and marketing. The parent company provides corporate business development and marketing. Larkin is the 2010 Small Business Administration Women in Business Champion in Maryland and recipient of the 2010 Enterprising Women of the Year Award. She was inducted into The Maryland Daily Record’s Circle of Excellence after receiving its Top 100 Women Award for the third time.

Stevenson University recently added five members to its president’s advisory council: Eric Brotman, president of Brotman Financial Group, Timonium; Jessica C.Y. Lee, supervising attorney at Murthy Law Firm, Owings Mills; Todd Parchman, partner of Parchman, Vaughan & Co., Baltimore; Gregory Smith, president of Smith Sports International, Baltimore; and Erik G. Wexler, president of Northwest Hospital and senior vice president of LifeBridge, Randallstown.

James G. Gresham, coordinator of assessments, training and test security for Baltimore City Public Schools, has been appointed to the board of trustees of the Community College of Baltimore County. He also serves as executive program director for the New Antioch Baptist Church of Randallstown’s Academic Center for Excellence, where he oversees the ACE Tutorial and Enrichment Programs sponsored by the Maryland State Department of Education and the Baltimore County Office of Community Conservation. Gresham has bachelor’s and doctoral degrees from Morgan State University and a master’s degree from Coppin State University.

Douglas Bothner has been elected to the board of trustees of the Contemporary Museum, in Baltimore. He is an associate at Ziger/Snead Architects. His work has won design awards from organizations including the American Institute of Architects of Baltimore and the American Institute of Architects of Maryland. Bothner is also a board member of the Oakenshawe Improvement Association. The Contemporary Museum promotes the art and culture of our time by producing and presenting new works, new thinking, and new practices.

The Baltimore County Chamber of Commerce has installed a new board of directors, led by Barry Luciani, senior vice president of Susquehanna Bank. He succeeds Gary Rubin, vice president of university advancement at Towson University. Luciani also serves on the boards Leadership Baltimore County, Heroes Helping Heroes and NeighborSpace of Baltimore County. Kyri Jacobs, executive vice president and shareholder of Bonnie Heneson Communications, has been named to the board of Leadership Howard County, a nonprofit organization that empowers leaders to strengthen and transform the Howard County community. Jacobs graduated from Leadership Howard County in 2009. She joined the HC DrugFree board in 2007 and became chair in 2009. Jacobs also serves on the board of the Domestic Violence Center in Howard County. Bonnie Heneson Communications is a marketing communications agency with offices in Owings Mills and Columbia.

The Maryland Food Bank recently elected new officers and added members: Phil Andrews, managing principal of Kramon & Graham, replaces Martin P. Brunk, who completed his five-year term as chair. Other new officers are: Evan Steiner, Constellation New Energy, vice chair; Steve Schwalb, Perdue Farms, secretary; and Don Hughes, Camden Partners, treasurer. Joining the board are: Robin Michel, president of Giant Food, Landover; Sunday Council-Baker, director of human resources, Safeway; Luwanda Jenkins, special secretary, Governor’s Office of Minority Affairs; Adrienne Jones, Maryland House of Delegates; and Arun Subhas, tax senior manager, Ernst & Young.

The Maryland Citizens for the Arts board of trustees appointed four board members to represent Western, Central and Eastern Maryland: Jose Dominguez, executive director of the Pyramid Atlantic Art Center in Silver Spring; Blake Robison, producing artistic director of Round House Theatre in Bethesda; Darcey Schoeninger, executive director of the Queen Anne’s County Arts Council; and Andy Vick, executive director of the Allegany Arts Council. The organization also appointed its first trustee emeritus, long-serving board member George Johnston.

The board of trustees of the Maryland Academy of Sciences, the parent organization of the Maryland Science Center, recently appointed three new members: York Eggleston IV, co-founder and CEO of Semantic Labs; Francie Spahn, an associate in the real estate department of Saul Ewing; and Brant J. Standridge, Baltimore regional president and Maryland state president for BB&T.

Construction

Tom Mawhinney has been rehired by Cianbro to serve as a senior project engineer based in Baltimore.  He will undertake the Big Slackwater Rehabilitation in Hagerstown for the National Park Service, a rehabilitation of the C&O Canal. Cianbro is an employee-owned general contractor that provides construction and service solutions throughout North America.

Grants

Carroll Hospital Center, in Westminster, recently received a $20,000 community grant from the Bank of America Charitable Foundation to bolster workforce development at the hospital. The money will be used for associates’ professional and leadership skills, clinical ladder programs for the nursing staff, and new wellness programs to encourage staff members to lead healthful lifestyles.

Restaurants

B&O American Brassiere, in Baltimore, has promoted Marcus Garner to general manager and Erich Stumpe to assistant general manager. Garner has been with the restaurant since he helped open it in July 2009 as assistant general manager. He previously was assistant general manager at Jackson 20 in Alexandria, Va., another Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants property. Garner also has experience in web development, creative design and business practices. Stumpe previously was banquets manager the Hotel Monaco, the Kimpton hotel adjacent to B&O American Brasserie. He also has been general manager of VIN Restaurant in Towson, and worked with BRGuest Restaurants at three locations.
