On the Move, 8/25: Kandel joins UM Center for Integrative Medicine Clinic

Barbara Kandel, a licensed acupuncturist and graduate of the Tai Sophia Institute, has joined the University of Maryland Center for Integrative Medicine Clinic. She specializes in acupuncture for pain management and women’s health concerns. Kandel earned a master’s degree in social work from the University of Maryland with a concentration in families and children. She teaches a community outreach course about acupuncture, meditation and self-healing. The clinic, at Kernan Hospital in Baltimore, offers primary care services, acupuncture, osteopathy, homeopathy, traditional Chinese medicine and complementary medicine therapies.

Awards
Oasis Design Group, a landscape architecture and urban design firm in Baltimore, has earned a 2010 Brick in Architecture Award from the Brick Industry Association for its Justison Landing project in Wilmington, Del. The 33-acre brownfield urban redevelopment won a Silver Award in the paving and landscape architecture category. Scott C. Scarfone, a principal at and founder of Oasis Design Group, will present a 45-minute session, “Rooftop Healing Gardens Benefit Hospitals and Sustain the Environment,” Oct. 14 at the Best Practices in Healthcare Construction Design conference in Washington, D.C. He will discuss the firm’s design of the Barbara Truland Butz Healing Garden, a newly installed rooftop healing garden at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Rockville.

Karun Khanna has been appointed chief operating officer of IndiSoft, a technology development firm that focuses on systems for the default services industry. Khanna has held senior management positions with ALLTEL Information Services, First Guaranty Mortgage and SystemLogic. He began his career in financial services as vice president at Citicorp Mortgage, where he led the development of one of the first point-of-sale systems in the industry. Khanna then led centralized mortgage originations for Travelers Mortgage. At U.S. Bancorp Mortgage he was one of the earliest adopters of automated underwriting. Khanna was director of technology marketing at Fannie Mae. IndiSoft, which is based in Columbia, develops, licenses and supports SaaS solutions for the financial services industry, including RxOffice Legal, RxOffice Mortgage Insurer and RxOffice Reporting Portal.

Brian J. Poe has been hired as vice president of operations by Berico Tailored Systems, of Columbia. Poe, a 1990 graduate of West Point, recently retired from the Army after 20 years of service. During his career, he served as a military intelligence officer specializing in the Signals Intelligence field with assignments at the National Security Agency and the Army’s Intelligence and Security Command headquarters. In fall 2007, Poe was named the signals intelligence adviser for the XVIIIth Airborne Corps, then served in Iraq from December 2007 to February 2009. His awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star, and the Knowlton Award for excellence in military intelligence.
