Accounting

Jason Dobrzykowski and Kaitlin Garvey have been named senior account executives in Weber Shandwick’s Baltimore office. Dobrzykowski has a bachelor’s degree from St. Mary’s College of Maryland. Garvey received her bachelor’s degree from Towson University.

Architecture

Mark L. Swanson has joined the staff of Purple Cherry Architects, of Annapolis. He will be the studio manager. His work includes a LEED Gold office building in building in Bloomington, Minn., which recently won two Best in Real Estate Awards from the Minneapolis-St. Paul Business Journal.

Attractions

Emma Connor has joined the Maryland Science Center as promotions coordinator. She has held similar positions in event and operations support with Port Discovery Children’s Museum and Glazier-Kennedy Insider’s Circle. She is a graduate of Towson University, and a Certified Tourism Ambassador with Visit Baltimore.

Awards

The National Alliance on Mental Health/Metropolitan Baltimore presented the 2010 Marcia G. Pines Advocate and Service Award to Clarissa Netter. Others receiving awards were: Robert Blankfeld, 2010 Frances J Lentz Mental Health Professional of the Year Award; Col. John Skinner, 2010 Baltimore City Police Officer of the Year; and Officer Kenneth Brown, 2010 Baltimore County Police Officer of the Year.

Purple Cherry Architects, of Annapolis, recently received a Maryland Award of Excellence for Marketing/Outstanding Use of Technology from the Home Builders Association of Maryland. The firm uses building information modeling software on all projects, which provides for tighter coordination and enables contractors to clearly understand design intent.

Tracey Haldeman, president of Pinnacle Communications, of Baltimore, has received the 2010 Brava! Women Business Achievement Award from SmartCEO magazine. Haldeman started Pinnacle Communications in 1997. The agency provides advertising campaigns for print, TV, radio and outdoor, online strategy, and social media, public relations and collateral development.

The College of Southern Maryland recently received the 2010 Mary D. Harrison Award for commitment to the arts from the Arts Council of Calvert County. The college, which has campuses in Calvert, Charles and St. Mary’s counties, schedules events including concerts, a piano competition, theater productions and traveling cultural exhibits.

Bowhead Science and Technology has received the Susquehanna Workforce Leadership Award for innovative workplace strategies that improve workers’ skills and workplace quality. The award includes a $1,000 training certificate to Harford Community College. In April, Bowhead launched an online training tool through which employees can pursue a variety of professional development opportunities. The company is a subsidiary of Bowhead Technical and Professional Services, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Alaska Native Corp.

Ryan Hlubb, principal and co-founder of Hlubb and Goldstein Valuation Group, was recognized as the Appraisal Institute’s July Volunteer of Distinction for Region VI, which consists of Maryland, the District of Columbia, Delaware, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. He is the past president of the Appraisal Institute’s Maryland Chapter and a former representative on the board of directors. Hlubb also has been a member of the Real Estate Advisory Board for the University of Baltimore’s Real Estate Program. His company has offices in Ellicott City, Bethesda and York, Pa.

Boards

Karen Weatherholtz, former senior vice president of human relations for McCormick & Co., recently was elected president of Network 2000, which promotes the advancement of women in the corporate world. She is the top human resources executive at Stella Maris Inc. Weatherholtz served as a director of GBMC Healthcare Inc. for 12 years and serves on the board of directors of The Chimes. She earned an MBA from Loyola College in Baltimore and a bachelor’s degree from Washington College. Other new officers with Network 2000 include President-elect Ellen Fish, president of Towson Community Bank; Vice President Diane D’Aiutolo, partner at Tydings and Rosenberg, a Baltimore law firm; Secretary Elise Morris, partner at Whiteford Taylor and Preston, a Baltimore law firm; and Treasurer Harriet Cooperman, a partner at Saul Ewing, in Baltimore.

The College of Southern Maryland’s board of trustees elected Mary Maddox Krug of Calvert County as chair and Austin Joseph Slater Jr. of St. Mary’s County as vice chair. Krug served as a Calvert County commissioner from 1990 to 1998, and has been an attorney, a press spokesman for the Smithsonian Institution and the National Park Service, and a local government representative for Constellation Energy. She serves on the Success by 6 Leadership Council and the Calvert Memorial Hospital board of directors. Slater is president and CEO of Southern Maryland Electric Co-op. He is chair of the board of the Maryland Chamber of Commerce and of the Southern Maryland Workforce Investment Board. Newly appointed to the college’s board is Theodore Harwood, who received his bachelor’s degree from the U.S. Naval Academy. His career included serving as Head of Budgets for Naval Platforms at the Pentagon. He is vice president of SENTEL’s Spectrum Engineering Group.

The Baltimore Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America recently elected Barry Williams, director of the Baltimore County Office of Workforce Development, as its board chairman. New executive board members are: Michael Poray, Constellation Energy Commodities Group; John Jeppi, Johns Hopkins Institutions; Steve Edwards, Edwards Project Solutions; Terri Harrington, MacKenzie Commercial; Joyce Uhlrich, Legg Mason Technology Services; and Michael Pedone, Venable.

James T. Brady, mid-Atlantic managing director of Ballantrae International, has been appointed to the board of trustees of Stevenson University. From 1995 to 1998, Brady served as secretary of Maryland’s Department of Business and Economic Development. Before that, he was employed by Arthur Andersen, for 33 years, the last 17 years as managing partner of the Baltimore and Long Island offices. Brady serves on the board of directors of Constellation Energy Group and on the boards of McCormick & Company, T. Rowe Price, and NexCen Brands. He is a director of the Baltimore Branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, Va.

Communications

Akinyemi (Yemi) Oteyowo has been hired as a Web developer by Pinnacle Communications, of Baltimore. He previously held a similar position with the Canton Group.

Construction

J. Patrick Fick has been appointed president of Fick Bros. Roofing & Exterior Remodeling, a Baltimore-based residential and commercial roofing company. He succeeds his father, Joseph A. Fick Jr., who served as president for the past 32 years. Fick began his formal career with Fick Bros. upon graduation from Mount St. Mary’s University. He has served in a variety of capacities, including sales and production, most recently as vice president and production manager.

Atlantic Mechanical Inc. has hired Bob Schulman as its project manager. The residential and commercial heating, air conditioning and plumbing company is in Owings Mills. Schulman was formerly commercial sales account manager at Home Paramount Pest Control and a fleet sales specialist at Len Stoler Lexus of Towson.

Development

Kristian L. Thompson has been named senior project manager of Craftsmen Developers, of Glen Burnie. Thompson, a certified LEED AP, is a graduate of St. Mary’s College and a member of the Green Building Certification Institute. Craftsmen Developers is a land development firm that acquires, develops and sells residential and commercial real estate properties in the mid-Atlantic region and provides consulting services to third-party clients.

Education

Five Baltimore-area high school students are among those selected as 2010 Bank of America Student Leaders for their leadership and passion for community service. The students took part in eight-week nonprofit internships in their local communities to learn about nonprofit management. The students are: Katy Bullard, a rising senior at Bryn Mawr School; Kayanna Johnson, a recent graduate of Western High School; Marissa Robinson, a recent graduate of Atholton High School; Liz Welliver, a rising senior at Winters Mill High School; and Taylor Yarbrough, a rising senior at the Institute of Notre Dame.

Health Care

Kennedy Krieger Institute recently hired Karen Schardt as assistant vice president of development and promoted Bryan Stark to assistant vice president of marketing and public relations. Schardt previously was director of development at the Johns Hopkins Berman Institute of Bioethics. She spent 14 years at Columbia University as a fundraiser for the sciences. Stark joined Kennedy Krieger in 2004 as director of marketing and public relations. Before that he was vice president of strategic planning at The Campbell Group.

Sandy Diana Kotiah, has joined the medical oncology and hematology department at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore. She previously worked at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, caring for critically ill hematologic malignancy patients. Dr. Kotiah is certified in performing bone marrow biopsies and administering intrathecal chemotherapy.

Colleen Higgins has been hired as director of employee education for the Office of Education and Academic Affairs of the VA Maryland Health Care System. Her primary office will be in Baltimore. Higgins transferred from the Palo Alto, Calif., VA office where she had served as the designated learning officer. She started her career as an application specialist at Meditech. Later, she worked at Stanford Hospital and Clinics.

IT

Dan Hutchinson has been named vice president of the enterprise systems division of Catapult Technology, of Bethesda. He has worked with Hewlett Packard, EM&I, America Online, Management Technology, Nortel Networks, Information Planning Associates and the Command Communications Survivability Program. Catapult is a Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Information Technology contractor to the federal government.

Marketing

Erin Herbert has been hired as a graphic designer by Devaney & Associates. She was most recently employed as a design assistant for the Liza Byrd Boutique in Owings Mills, and previously worked at Merrick Towle Communications as a studio artist. She has a bachelor’s degree from McDaniel College.

Medical

William Valente has joined the Center for Bone Health and Division of Endocrinology at Mercy Medical Center, in Baltimore. His expertise in endocrinology includes a focus in thyroid disorders. Dr. Valente earned his degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine, completed his internal medicine residency and fellowship in endocrinology and metabolism at the University of Maryland Hospital, and completed a research fellowship in thyroid disorders at the National Institutes of Health. He has been appointed a clinical professor at the University of Maryland’s Department of Medicine. Dr. Valente also earned a master’s of business administration at Johns Hopkins University.

Public Affairs

Kelly Cahill has been hired as director of digital strategy for Kearney O’Doherty Public Affairs’ KO Digital department. Cahill join the firm in September 2009 after working at several public relations and advertising agencies and a number of regional publications.
