Accounting

The Reznick Group has hired four associates for its Baltimore office: Jack Seng rejoins the firm in its audit department after working for his family’s business for two years; he has degrees from the University of Maryland. Mike Ring has joined the tax consulting team; he has a bachelor’s degree from Salisbury University. Jackie Kalish also joined the tax consulting team; she has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland. Richard Armstead has joined the audit team after two years with KPMG; he has a bachelor’s degree from Morgan State University.

Architecture

Hord Coplan Macht, of Baltimore, has promoted Tom Casey, John Harris and Jeff Kreshtool to senior associate.

Awards

Jack Dwyer, president of Capital Funding Group, of Baltimore, has received the American Red Cross of Central Maryland’s Philanthropist of the Year Award for his donation to the Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund. Capital Funding Group is a full-service mortgage banking firm that provides financial services to clients in the long-term care and hospital industries.

Merkle, a customer relationship marketing agency headquartered in Columbia, and its subsidiary, LogicLab, received Innovation Awards from the Direct Marketing Association during the DMA2010 Conference and Exhibition. Merkle’s Customer Engagement Monitor took top honors in the Loyalty category, while LogicLab Match Analytics won the Broadcast Media category.

Amy Burke Friedman, vice president of Profiles Inc., a public relations, marketing, and special events company in Baltimore, has been named one of 2010’s “15 to Watch” by PR News. The award honors 15 budding PR leaders and creative practitioners, age 30 and under, from across the world. Burke Friedman is a graduate of the University of Maryland, College Park, a member of the Baltimore School for the Arts’ Stage One board and a fundraiser for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

Tom Bowman, of Bowman & Co., of Columbia, recently received the Professional Association of Small Business Accountant’s Spirit Award for lifetime achievement. Bowman has served a three-year term on the association’s board of directors. He developed and teaches “Blueprint for Success,” a course for accountants on how to better serve small-business clients.

Dr. Thomas M. Scalea, physician-in-chief at the University of Maryland R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, received the National Italian American Foundation’s Special Achievement Award in Science and Medicine. In addition to being responsible for all clinical care and medical administration, Dr. Scalea is the Francis X. Kelly Professor of Trauma Surgery and Director of the School of Medicine’s Program in Trauma. After the earthquake in Sichuan in 2008, he took the only non-Chinese team invited by the Chinese government to provide medical care to the earthquake victims. Early last year he led Shock Trauma’s efforts after the earthquake in Haiti.

Adam Freeland, a financial planner with Cambridge Investment Research, through Harford Financial Group in Bel Air, has been awarded the Certified Financial Planner designation from the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards. Freeland is a registered representative through Cambridge Investment Research Advisors and a chartered retirement plans specialist. He holds an MBA from Johns Hopkins University.

Five area employers were honored by the Baltimore Workforce Investment Board and Baltimore County Workforce Development Council with Baltimore Regional Workforce Innovations Awards for innovative approaches to work force development: BITHGROUP Technologies; the Baltimore County Public Library; Second Chance; CitiFinancial North America; and Helion Technologies.

Van Eperen & Co., a woman-owned business based in Bethesda that specializes in customized communications, has been selected by Community Ministries of Rockville as the nonprofit organization’s Business Partner of the Year. Van Eperen & Co. partnered with Community Ministries to launch the Mansfield Kaseman Health Clinic, assisting with sponsorship outreach, event planning and media/public awareness outreach and promotions services.

Boards

James Gorman has joined the Howard County Advisory Board of Family and Children’s Services of Central Maryland. Gorman is an assistant vice president and commercial branch manager of M&T Bank in Columbia. Family and Children’s Services offers family and individual counseling, in-home services for elderly and disabled people and the Healthy Families program for first-time parents.

The Health Facilities Association of Maryland has chosen its leaders for 2011: Chairman: John Spadaro, regional vice president of operations, Northeast Region, East Division, SavaSeniorCare, Owings Mills. Vice Chair: Clifton Porter, assistant vice president, government relations, HCR ManorCare. Treasurer: Bob Lanza, senior administrator, Salisbury Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, Salisbury. Past Chair: Eric Shope, senior vice president-business development, Stella Maris, Timonium.

Consulting

Shirley Collier and H. Victor Hess have joined Genna & Associates, of Howard County, which serves as a mentor and guide for entrepreneurs looking to strengthen their businesses. Collier, who will be senior associate, has more than 25 years of experience in technical and executive positions in the technology, university, government, and financial services industries. Hess, who will be a partner in the firm, has been a senior manager, an executive and a business owner, with more than 30 years of experience in marketing, sales, business development, and technology in the commercial and federal government arenas.

Education

Karen Stults has been named director of engagement by Maryland Institute College of Art, in Baltimore, where she will lead MICA’s new Office of Community Engagement for academically based community partnerships. Stults had been director of corporate, foundation and government relations. She is a member of the board of directors and cast of Fluid Movement, and serves on the board of directors of the Baltimore Conservatory Association and the development committee of Arts Every Day. Also, Kristy Taylor will be program manager for MICA PLACE. She most recently served as community liaison for the City of Baltimore Mayor’s Office of Neighborhoods. She has a bachelor’s degree from the College of Notre Dame.

Christine SySantos has joined the management team of Celebree Learning Centers, of Bel Air, as director of teacher development. She will direct and guide implementation of curriculum throughout Celebree’s 20 preschools. SySantos previously was a school improvement consultant for Success for All Foundation, specializing in reading success with preschool children through middle school. She was an elementary school teacher for several years.

Two Community College of Baltimore County students received $2,000 scholarships from Grainger, an international distributor of industrial and facilities maintenance supplies: Mark Kennedy is a full-time student in the automotive technology program; James Martin III is self-employed and enrolled in evening classes of the CCBC construction management program.

Health Care

Dr. Vivian Pao has been appointed chief of endocrinology and medical director of the Diabetes Management Center at St. Joseph Medical Center, of Towson. Dr. Pao is board-certified in internal medicine and in endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism.

Carolyn L. Candiello has been named to the new position of vice president for quality and patient safety with GBMC HealthCare, the parent company of Greater Baltimore Medical Center, Gilchrist Hospice Care and Greater Baltimore Medical Associates. Candiello most recently served as director, quality and patient safety at Holy Family Hospital, an acute-care hospital in Methuen, Mass.

Cynthia Fager has been named director of volunteer services for GBMC HealthCare, parent company of Greater Baltimore Medical Center, Gilchrist Hospice Care and Greater Baltimore Medical Associates. Fager most recently served as volunteer services coordinator for Washington Home and Community Hospices. She has worked as an English tutor in Israel, in management positions with Macy’s, as an English school program developer in Japan, as a supervisor with the Baltimore County Occupational Training Administration, and as an adolescent and crisis counselor. Fager completed graduate courses in teamwork and organizational behavior at Johns Hopkins University and Towson University.

Dr. Chris D’Adamo has joined the University of Maryland School of Medicine Center for Integrative Medicine, where he will conduct research into the roles of nutrition, exercise, and genetics in preventing chronic disease. D’Adamo earned a doctorate in epidemiology from the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He is also a certified personal fitness trainer and a certified nutrition consultant.

Chase Brexton Health Services, of Baltimore, has welcomed five new care providers: Dr. Taro J. Adachi received his bachelor’s degree from Johns Hopkins University; he completed his internship and residency training in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Maryland Medical System. Dr. Laila Hochhausen, a staff therapist, received her doctorate degree in clinical and community psychology from George Washington University. Dr. Santhia A. Mathew, a staff physician, completed her family medicine residency as chief resident at the University of Maryland Family and Community Medicine. Dr. Vishal Sethi, an infectious disease physician, completed his internal medicine residency at Resurrection Westlake Hospital in Melrose Park, Ill., and recently completed his fellowship in infectious disease at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. Dr. Andrea E. Speedie, a staff physician, received her doctorate from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.

Marketing

Justin Barber has been hired by Warschawski, of Baltimore, as director of interactive design. He previously was interactive design director at The Canton Group, and a lead designer and marketing manager at American Home Mortgage. Barber has a bachelor’s degree from the Maryland Institute College of Art.

Real Estate

Victor White has been appointed chief operating officer of The Hogan Companies, of Annapolis. White began his real estate career as a property manager at Jerome H. Meyer & Co. in Chicago. The former Frederick resident returned to Maryland to join the Hogan Companies in 2007 as a land and commercial broker. His portfolio includes projects throughout the United States, with a focus on Anne Arundel, Howard, Frederick, and Montgomery counties, and the Eastern Shore.

Research

Gregg Lindner has joined Arbitron in the new position of chief research officer and executive vice president, service innovation. He will be based in Arbitron’s headquarters in Columbia. Lindner previously had been with Scarborough Research, where he was executive vice president, since 1993. He holds master’s and bachelor’s degrees from the University of Maryland.
