Architecture
Hord Coplan Macht, a full-service architecture and landscape architecture firm, of Baltimore, has promoted three staff members to associate: Bridget Parlato, senior graphic designer; Tarek Saleh, project architect in the firm’s housing studio; and Scott Walters, project architect in the education studio.
Awards
Debbie Edwards Veihdeffer, director of work-life integration at Northrop Grumman’s electronic systems sector in Baltimore, recently received the Work-Life Balance Award from the Society of Women Engineers. She serves as the human resources focal point for three sector-level employee resource groups and is the project leader for two science, technology, engineering and mathematics educational outreach programs for teachers. Edwards Veihdeffer earned a master’s degree in applied behavioral science and human resources development from Johns Hopkins University.
Helen M. Phillips, enterprise product team leader for the design and manufacturability of next-generation transmit/receive modules at Northrop Grumman’s electronic systems sector in Linthicum, recently received the Society of Women Engineers’ Emerging Leader in Construction and Manufacturing Award. Phillips has led interdisciplinary teams of engineers through concept development, design, build and testing for a wide range of products including state-of-the-art microcircuits. Northrop Grumman gave her its 2009 Presidential Leadership Award for Innovation and Technology. Phillips earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in mechanical engineering from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.
Habitat for Humanity of the Chesapeake has received a 4-star rating from Charity Navigator, America’s largest independent evaluator of nonprofits and charities. Habitat for Humanity of the Chesapeake works with people of all faiths and backgrounds to provide simple, decent, affordable homes for families in Anne Arundel County and the Baltimore region.
Syma R. Mendelsohn, senior vice president, marketing & communications, of insurance consultant RCM&D, of Towson, received the 2010 Award for Distinguished Achievement from the Direct Marketing Association of Washington, D.C. Mendelsohn has served as a member of the board and president of the organization. She now is president of the DMAW Educational Foundation. Before joining RCM&D, Mendelsohn was an executive vice president with JZA Inc., a broker/administrator that served associations and nonprofits.
Renegade, a full service marketing company, of Hunt Valley, recently won a Silver Award in the 27th Annual Mark Awards, a Cable & Telecommunications Association for Marketing competition that recognizes achievement and excellence in marketing from networks, cable companies, and their agencies.
Charly Rosemary of Baltimore and Zachary Lukowski of Glen Arm received the Community College of Baltimore County’s John Bruce Johnson Memorial Scholarship in Theatre. Rosemary has participated in many productions in Baltimore and Baltimore County, including with the Three Ring Theatre Company for 10 years and in leading roles at the Calvert Hall High School Performing Arts Camp. Lukowski, a Dulaney High School graduate, has performed in “The Fantasticks,” “The Doctor’s Inn,” “Once Upon a Mattress,” “The Cop and The Anthem” and “Macbeth.”
Purple Cherry Architects, of Annapolis, has been honored by American School & University magazine for outstanding design in special needs educational interiors for its work with Opportunity Builders Inc., in Millersville, which has been selected for publication in the magazine’s 2010 Education Interiors Showcase.
Dr. Jay Greenstein of Sport and Spine Rehab/Sport and Spine Athletics, in Fort Washington, recently was named Chiropractor of the Year by the Maryland Chiropractic Association for his leadership of the insurance committee and his representation of the MCA at national conferences. Dr. R. Reeve Askew of Easton received the Frank Roberts Memorial Award for his dedication to the MCA and his service on the executive committee of the American Chiropractic Association and other nonprofit boards. Dr. Donald Hirsh, of Hirsh Chiropractic Center in Laurel, received the Aaron Barad/Joel Kruh Legislative Award for legislative accomplishments. Dr. Richard Schmitt of Back To Health Chiropractic Centers, in Annapolis, received the President’s Award.
Volunteers of America Chesapeake, based in Lanham, recently received the NPower Greater D.C. Region’s Technology Innovation Award at the annual Celebration of Technology Event. The award recognized the faith-based nonprofit’s implementation of cloud-based data management to integrate billing and the accounting back-office operations onto a single cloud-computing knowledge management platform that is secure, affordable, and moldable to the organization’s needs.
Susan Katz, owner of The Growth Coach in Baltimore, recently was named 2010 Coach of the Year by the North American franchise system of small-business coaches. Katz was also recently recognized as the National Association of Women Business Owners’ Baltimore Regional Rising Star.
Martha A. Smith, president of Anne Arundel Community College, recently received the 2010 Anne Arundel County Good Scout Award from the Baltimore Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America. The award is in recognition of her community service.
Preservation Maryland has presented its annual Historic Preservation Awards: John L. Graham III received the President’s Award for professional architectural work and volunteer historic preservation efforts on the Eastern Shore. Baltimoreans Eddie and Sylvia Brown of Brown Capital Management and the Brownstone Project received the Stewardship Award. Karen Lewand received the Volunteer Award for her work with Baltimore Heritage and the city’s Commission for Historical and Architectural Preservation. The inaugural Phoenix Award was presented to Humanim Inc., a Columbia-based human services organization that has transformed Baltimore’s former American Brewery into its workforce development center.

Evans is chief underwriting officer at Frederick Mutual Insurance Co., of Frederick; Jason Goldsmith is chief executive officer of CARCHEX, which provides extended auto warranties and mobile pre-purchase vehicle inspections; William Jameson is the senior sales director of Luna, a full shop-at-home floor covering company; Shohreh A. Kaynama is dean of the College of Business and Economics at Towson University. Dave H. Wilson is president of Preston Automotive Group, in Maryland, and Millsboro Auto Mart in Delaware.
Terry Manning, vice president of organizational learning at The Children’s Guild, has joined the board of the Maryland Association of Resources for Family and Youth, a nonprofit provider network committed to strengthening families, youth and communities through advocacy. Manning previously was a therapist for family and children at the Family and Children’s Services Sexual Abuse Treatment Center in Carroll County. She received a master’s degree in social work and a bachelor’s degree in social work and psychology from the University of Maryland.
The board of directors for the National Investment Center for the Seniors Housing & Care Industry, in Annapolis, announced its officers for the 2010-11 term, three new board members, and three members who were re-elected: Kevin McMeen, president-real estate of MidCap Financial, is board chair; Randy Richardson, president of Vi, is vice chair; Brad Razook, president & managing director of CS Capital Advisors, is secretary; and George V. Hager Jr., chairman & CEO of Genesis Healthcare Corp., is treasurer. New to the board are Brian Beckwith, senior managing director of GE Capital, Healthcare Financial Services; Charles J. (Chuck) Herman, executive vice president & chief investment officer of Health Care REIT; and Ray Lewis, executive vice president & chief investment officer of Ventas. Loren Shook, chairman of the board and president/CEO of Silverado Senior Living, was appointed to the board as chairman of the Operator Advisory Board. The Anne Arundel Health System board of trustees has added two members: June Caudill is president of the AAMC Auxiliary, and co-owner of Landscapes by Keith. Dr. Maulik S. Joshi is president of Health Research & Education Trust and senior vice president for research at the American Hospital Association. The officers of the AAHS board are: George Moran, chair; Biana Arentz, vice chair; Richard Morgan, treasurer; and Patricia Roche, secretary.
Lucas Matesa, senior manager in the Reznick Group’s Baltimore office, has been appointed to the board of directors for Project PLASE Inc., which provides transitional housing, permanent housing and supportive services to homeless adults in Baltimore. Matesa provides audit and accounting services for clients in multifamily residential real estate, real estate investment trusts, commercial real estate, the mortgage broker industry, nonprofits, health and human service organizations; and state and local government agencies.
Carroll Hospital Center, in Westminster, recently appointed two new members to the hospital’s board of directors: Thomas Welliver, director of strategic initiatives at McDaniel College, previously served as chief financial officer at Merritt Properties in Baltimore. W. Dennis Thomas worked for 18 years in the private sector as a senior executive for International Paper. Before that, he was appointed by then-President Ronald Reagan to serve as deputy assistant to the president and later as assistant to the president. He also served as assistant secretary of Treasury for the U.S. Senate and as chief of staff to two senators.
Nancy M. Smith, director of grants development for the Community College of Baltimore County, has been elected to the board of directors of the Council for Resource Development in Washington, D.C. Smith will serve a one-year term as a director. The CRD represents more than 1,600 community college resource development officers for more than 730 two-year colleges and is an affiliate council of the American Association of Community Colleges. In 2008, Smith completed the CRD Resource Development Specialist Program and has made presentations throughout the organization at national conferences and webinars.
Health Care
Dr. Chris D’Adamo has joined the University of Maryland School of Medicine Center for Integrative Medicine, where he will conduct research into the roles of nutrition, exercise, and genetics in preventing chronic disease. D’Adamo earned a doctorate in epidemiology from the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He is also a certified personal fitness trainer and a certified nutrition consultant.
The Greater Baltimore Medical Center Sexual Assault Forensic Examination program has received a $1 million gift to support its work providing comprehensive services for victims of sexual assault. The donor wishes to remain anonymous. The program is the sole provider of specially trained and certified forensic nurse examiners who care for adolescent and adult victims (ages 13 and older) of sexual assault in Baltimore County. S.A.F.E. nurses complete a full assessment of the patient, obtain potential forensic evidence and provide antibiotic therapy, emergency contraception and resources for crisis counseling and support services.
Chase Brexton Health Services, of Baltimore, has welcomed five new care providers: Dr. Taro J. Adachi received his bachelor’s degree from Johns Hopkins University; he completed his internship and residency training in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Maryland Medical System. Dr. Laila Hochhausen, a staff therapist, received her doctorate degree in clinical and community psychology from George Washington University. Dr. Santhia A. Mathew, a staff physician, completed her family medicine residency as chief resident at the University of Maryland Family and Community Medicine. Dr. Vishal Sethi, an infectious disease physician, completed his internal medicine residency at Resurrection Westlake Hospital in Melrose Park, Ill., and recently completed his fellowship in infectious disease at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. Dr. Andrea E. Speedie, a staff physician, received her doctorate from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.
Cynthia Fager has been named director of volunteer services for GBMC HealthCare, parent company of Greater Baltimore Medical Center, Gilchrist Hospice Care and Greater Baltimore Medical Associates. Fager most recently served as volunteer services coordinator for Washington Home and Community Hospices. She has worked as an English tutor in Israel, in management positions with Macy’s, as an English school program developer in Japan, as a supervisor with the Baltimore County Occupational Training Administration, and as an adolescent and crisis counselor. Fager completed graduate courses in teamwork and organizational behavior at Johns Hopkins University and Towson University.
Long-Term Care
AnnMarie Gordon has been promoted to education program manager of LifeSpan Network’s Beacon Institute, of Columbia. Gordon previously was executive assistant with the Beacon Institute, which offers more than 55 education seminars and trains more than 1,800 senior care professionals each year. Before joining LifeSpan, Gordon served as office manager for McGowan, Cecil & Smathers, a law firm in Laurel.
Clifton Scott has been hired as director of human resources of Keswick Multi-Care Center, a long-term care facility in northern Baltimore. Scott has more than 25 years of experience in the human resources field, most recently as the chief human resources consultant at C.G. Scott Consulting Services. He holds a master’s degree in human resources management from Indiana-Purdue University and is a board member for the Treatment Resources for Youth Inc.
Marketing
Justin Barber has been hired by Warschawski, of Baltimore, as director of interactive design. He previously was interactive design director at The Canton Group, and a lead designer and marketing manager at American Home Mortgage. Barber has a bachelor’s degree from the Maryland Institute College of Art.
Devaney & Associates, of Towson, has become certified as a participant in the Small Business Reserve program by Maryland. It has also been recertified as a Minority Business Enterprise.
Nonprofits
Bola Odueke has joined the Y of Central Maryland as human resource director. In this position, Odueke will be responsible for the oversight of employee relations, recruiting, retention, and training functions. He has extensive experience with human resources experience and international exposure spanning three continents. Odueke has a master’s degree in human resources development from Villanova University.
To decrease child sexual abuse, Baltimore Child Abuse Center is launching a regional prevention effort focused on awareness and community education with Brooke Poklemba, formerly Miss Maryland 2009 and a community spokesperson, as its outreach and prevention coordinator. Poklemba will work with schools, churches, community centers, and businesses to share information on topics surrounding child sexual abuse. This effort, funded in large part by the No More Stolen Childhoods, a nonprofit organization, will offer educational programs for parents, professionals, and children of all ages.
Ron Slomski has been hired as director of communications of the National Kidney Foundation of Maryland. He will work from its Towson headquarters, coordinating, producing and distributing e-newsletters, brochures and the annual report, and maintaining and updating NKF-MD’s website and Facebook page. Slomski also will organize Kidney Walk events and the Classic Golf Tournament through volunteer management. He most recently was assistant director of annual giving at Hood College.

Acme Paper & Supply Co. has hired two account managers to work out of its headquarters in Savage: Nathan Sugar previously was a territory manager for CertainTeed Gypsum. He will focus on the food service, hospitality and health care markets. David L. Wagner most recently was vice president of sales and marketing for SF&C Corp., in Red Lion, Pa. He also has served as regional sales manager for Unisource Worldwide/Georgia Pacific, in Jessup, sales representative for Alling and Cory in Camp Hill, Pa, and sales representative for Harrisburg Paper Co. in Harrisburg, Pa.
Payroll
Amy Yendall has joined Payroll Network, of Kensington, as district sales manager, focusing on sales for organizations with up to 100 employees in the Washington, D.C., metro region. Yendall was a business owner for more than 20 years, and for the past five years operated Our Town of Montgomery County, a marketing firm. She has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland, College Park.
Public Relations
Maroon PR, of Columbia, has hired three staff members: Matt Williams is now vice president of business development; he previously was executive vice president and chief of staff for Washington Sports and Entertainment, serving as a policy and public relations advisor to Abe Pollin. Katy Fincham is now an associate account executive; she previously was director of marketing for the Frederick Keys, the Class A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles. Courtney Carey is now the firm’s projects manager.
Marianne E. Ortiz has been hired as account manager and Michelle “Shelly” May as junior account executive by Profiles Inc., a Baltimore-based public relations, marketing, social media and special events firm. Ortiz previously was an account manager at Abel Communications. She is a University of Maryland, College Park graduate. May previously was an assistant manager and store marketing director for the South Moon Under Towson location. She is a graduate of Stevenson University.
Real Estate
Victor White has been appointed chief operating officer of The Hogan Companies, of Annapolis. White began his real estate career as a property manager at Jerome H. Meyer & Co. in Chicago. The former Frederick resident returned to Maryland to join the Hogan Companies in 2007 as a land and commercial broker. His portfolio includes projects throughout the United States, with a focus on Anne Arundel, Howard, Frederick, and Montgomery counties, and the Eastern Shore.
Research
Gregg Lindner has joined Arbitron in the new position of chief research officer and executive vice president, service innovation. He will be based in Arbitron’s headquarters in Columbia. Lindner previously had been with Scarborough Research, where he was executive vice president, since 1993. He holds master’s and bachelor’s degrees from the University of Maryland.
