Architecture

Jennifer Line has been promoted to associate of Murphy & Dittenhafer Architects, which has offices in Baltimore and York, Pa. Line will be responsible for the architectural design and management of projects from schematic design through completion of construction. She will continue to manage the firm’s LEED certification program.

Boards

The Horizon Foundation, of Howard County, has added five members to its board of trustees: Guillermo Birmingham is director of administration at the Pan American Health Organization; Glenn Falcao is president of Falcao Investment Group; Steve Gershman is a CPA and shareholder with Katz Abosch; Lynne Hall Quinn is the marketing director of Exit 24; Marianne Ross is a senior veterinary epidemiologist with the U.S. Public Health Service. The Horizon Foundation uses grants, community programs and partnerships with private and public institutions to promote and enhance community health and wellness in Howard County.

Lt. Gen. Joe N. Ballard, U.S. Army (Ret), founder, president and CEO of The Ravens Group, has been named to the board of directors of Fulton Financial Corp., effective Jan. 18. Ballard also serves on the board of directors of The Columbia Bank. The Ravens Group is a government solutions provider in Lanham whose core competencies include health care and hospitality services. Fulton Financial operates branches in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey and Virginia.

BioMarker Strategies, of Baltimore, has appointed three new directors: Dr. Samuel Broder is a former director of the National Cancer Institute and chief medical officer at Celera; Dr. Mark Velleca is a founder and former senior vice president of CGI Pharmaceuticals; Dr. Paul Beresford is vice president of business development at Biodesix and former vice president of translational diagnostics at Ventana Medical Systems. BioMarker Strategies is a cancer diagnostics company that is developing a biomarker testing system to improve the treatment of cancer.

Jania Stout, vice president of PSA Insurance and Financial Services, has been named president of the Chesapeake Human Resources Association. She had been director of membership development for the association, whose mission as a nonprofit is to be the voice of the profession on human resource management issues. Before working at PSA, Stout was vice president at Lockton Companies, and vice president at Fidelity Investment’s middle marketing division. She has received the PLANSPONSOR Adviser Team of the Year award and been on 401KWire’s List of the 300 Most Influential Advisors in Defined Contribution.

Joan Renner has been appointed chapter president of CREW-Baltimore. She has served on CREW-Baltimore’s board since 2007 and is on the finance committee of CREW Network. Renner is the chief financial officer of The Brick Companies, a privately held real estate company based in Edgewater. She is a past recipient of a Tribute to Women and Industry award. CREW-Baltimore (Commercial Real Estate Women) promotes the business interests and professional advancement of women in all disciplines of the commercial real estate industry by providing educational and networking opportunities, and contributing resources to support the local community.

Congregation

Har Sinai Congregation, of Owings Mills, has hired Melanie Waxman as director of family programming and Ben Fuld as senior youth group director. Waxman previously served as youth and teens director for the Jewish Community Center; principal at Columbia Jewish Community School; program director at Temple Beth Orr in Coral Springs, Fla.; and youth director for Har Sinai Congregation. She attended graduate school at Baltimore Hebrew University, now the Baltimore Hebrew Institute at Towson University, and earned her bachelor’s degree at Towson University. Fuld, a senior at the University of Maryland, has held several positions serving youth groups. He was a member of the senior staff at the Union of Reform Judaism’s Camp Kutz.

Construction

Robert J. Plumeri has been selected as the new executive vice president and chief operating officer of Holland Construction, a full-service construction management company with offices in Columbia, Hanover, Pa., and Sarasota, Fla. Plumeri was previously president and chief operating officer of Richard D. Poole, LLC. He has more than 35 years of construction management experience, including with Kiewit Construction and the Hospital Building and Equipment Co.

Thompson Creek Window Co., of Landover, was recently named Replacement Contractor of the Year by Replacement Contractor magazine, citing the company’s dedication to customer service. Thompson Creek manufactures, sells and installs its windows.

Consulting

Clemons & Associates, based in White Marsh, recently was awarded accreditation by AMC Institute, the global trade association representing the association management industry. Association management companies specialize in managing associations and not-for-profit organizations, providing leadership and professional management.

Education

Maryland Institute College of Art has established the Tylden Westcott Streett Scholarship for Figurative Art, created through a gift from alumnus and interdisciplinary sculpture professor Tylden Westcott Streett. The endowment begins with $25,000, and an additional $175,000 will be added through a bequest. The scholarship will be open to MICA undergraduates, working in any medium, whose work explores the human figure. Scholarships will be awarded based on financial need and merit, and recipients will be chosen among candidates entered in MICA’s juried annual Student Scholarship Competition. Two years after graduating, Streett returned to MICA in 1959 as a teacher of figurative sculpture. He served as director of the Rinehart School of Sculpture from 1959 to 1960 and as director of graduate programs from 1965 to 1971. He was awarded MICA’s Medal of Honor in 2009.

The Gaithersburg-Germantown Chamber of Commerce presented scholarships last month to four Montgomery College students. Chamber members MAR Inc., The Gazette and Hughes Network Systems together provided three one-year scholarships and one gap funding scholarship for a prior recipient to assist with costs for finishing his education at Montgomery College. The four recipients were: Zulaqarnain Jamal, a nuclear engineering major who plans to transfer to Georgia Tech; Syed Elahi, who is studying mechanical engineering; Vy Nguyen, an electrical engineering major; and Mohammad Alhassen, a chemical engineering major.

The Calvert Chamber of Commerce recently presented the College of Southern Maryland with donations totaling $3,074 to support student scholarships.

David Stewart, a 37-year faculty member at the Community College of Baltimore County, has been appointed academic dean of CCBC’s School of Mathematics and Science. He has been mathematics department chair at CCBC Catonsville, and division chairperson for Mathematics, Science, Engineering and Technology and academic dean for Mathematics and Science at CCBC Dundalk. Stewart has a master’s degree in applied mathematics from Johns Hopkins University. He has held adjunct teaching positions at Johns Hopkins University, Towson University and the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.

Edgar B. Schick has been appointed president of Baltimore International College. He had been interim president since May 10. Schick has served as head of the State College and University System of Maryland, vice chancellor of the University of Maryland System, president of the Luther Institute, and chief academic officer of St. John Fisher College, Eastern Illinois University, and St. Mary College of Leavenworth. He was interim provost of Manhattanville College before being hired by Baltimore International College. Schick has served as a consultant for the Association of Governing Boards of Colleges and Universities and the American Association of State Colleges and Universities.

Engineering

G.W. Stephens has hired two land development design engineers: Stephen J. Gorski, who has 24 years of experience in civil engineering and water resources, will serve as senior project manager and lead engineer for a variety of land development projects. David A. Rudisill specializes in design and expert testimony for planning, and project management associated with the designs of commercial, industrial and residential development. G.W. Stephens is a consulting engineering, land planning and surveying firm with offices in Hunt Valley and Abingdon, Md., and Georgetown, Del.

Health Care

Dr. Scott Sherr has joined the internal medicine/primary care practice of Dr. Simon Scalia at Mercy Canton Family Care, in Baltimore. Sherr received his medical degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine and completed his residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Maryland Medical System.

Dr. Paul Wu has been named medical director of Patient First—Bel Air. He is responsible for all medical operations of the center. A board-certified physician, Dr. Wu began his career with Patient First as a staff physician at the Green Spring Station center in 2008. One year later, he was appointed assistant medical director of Patient First—Bel Air.

Insurance

Deborah R. Rivkin has been named vice president of government affairs for Maryland by CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield. Rivkin, who previously was executive director and chief lobbyist for the League of Life and Health Insurers of Maryland, replaces William F. Casey, who has retired after 21 years with CareFirst. She holds a juris doctorate from Georgetown University and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland. Rivkin, who serves as vice chair for the Baltimore-Washington Corridor Chamber of Commerce board of directors, has 23 years of experience practicing law at such Baltimore firms as Funk & Bolton P.A., Shapiro & Olander, and Piper & Marbury, and has served as retained counsel in Maryland for America’s Health Insurance Plans and AMERIGROUP Corp., among other clients.

Marketing

MGH, a Baltimore integrated marketing communications agency, has added three employees: Kerry Flanagan is an account supervisor who previously worked at gkv. Guy Schmidt is an interactive project manager who previously worked as a Web facilitator at Sabre Hospitality Solutions; he has a bachelor’s degree from Frostburg State University. Erik Verleger is an art director who previously was creative/art director at Rockland Studios; he has a bachelor’s degree from Towson University.

Nonprofits

Christal M. Jackson has been appointed chief development officer of Associated Black Charities, of Baltimore. Jackson has launched three startup companies, and worked for Jackson & Associates Development Group and the Central Pregnancy Care Center, of Houston; Paul Quinn College, Dallas; United Negro College Fund, Virginia; The Children’s Defense Fund, Washington, D.C.; Big Bethel AME Church, Atlanta; and Luis Palua Evangelistic Association, Portland, Ore. She holds a master’s degree in theological studies from Duke University, and a bachelor’s degree in psychology and religion from Spelman College. Jackson is a Certified Grant Writer, and a board member of the Urban Souls Dance Ensemble.

Robert M. Aydukovic has been appointed executive director of the Maryland Center for Construction Education and Innovation, a nonprofit that works to strengthen the state’s construction industry. Aydukovic has 20 years of experience in economic development and in Maryland’s construction and real estate industries. He has a master’s degree in real estate development from Johns Hopkins University. Aydukovic most recently served as principal and owner of Downtown Development Advisors, and as an adjunct faculty member at the University of Baltimore. MCCEI was established at Towson University as a public-private partnership of state government, universities, community colleges and secondary schools to promote the economic vitality of construction in Maryland, serve as a resource for industry, education and government, and position construction as a career of choice.

Technology

Leon Stinson has been appointed vice president of aviation management by Data Solutions & Technology Inc., a global technology and solutions company in Lanham. Stinson is responsible for aviation support services, including air traffic control systems and staffing, airspace planning and safety management system training. He is a U.S. Air Force veteran and has 24 years of experience with the Federal Aviation Administration. Stinson was on the team that was instrumental in opening Kabul, Afghanistan’s Air Control Center, the world’s first completely non-radar air traffic control center. Previously, he was an air route traffic control center operations manager.
