University of Maryland head men’s basketball coach Gary Williams announced Thursday he will retire after a 33-year career.
Williams will join Maryland Athletic Director Kevin Anderson and University President Dr. Wallace D. Loh at a news conference on Friday, according to the University of Maryland’s website.
“It’s the right time,” Williams said in a news release. “I am fiercely proud of the program we have built here. I couldn’t have asked any more from my players, my assistant coaches, the great Maryland fans and this great university.”
Williams will stay on with Maryland as assistant athletic director and special assistant to Anderson, where he will continue to serve as scholarship campaign co-chair. Williams will also work with the Terrapin Club to fundraise for athletics and serve as an ambassador for the university, according to the release.
