James T. “Jim” Smith Jr., former Baltimore County Executive, has joined the Towson law firm of Smith, Gildea & Schmidt, the firm announced Wednesday.

Smith will serve as “of counsel,” assisting in complex litigation and business matters, administrative law and governmental affairs. He will work with the firm’s 11 attorneys, including his son, Michael Paul Smith.

“I have been blessed with many opportunities in the past, but I always wanted to be a part of building a premier law firm. Joining my son and Smith, Gildea & Schmidt will give me that opportunity,” said Jim Smith.  A lifelong resident of Baltimore County, Jim Smith has spent much of his personal and professional life in public service.

Before his eight years as County Executive, he served for 16 years as a judge on the Baltimore County Circuit Court, where he ruled on both civil and criminal cases, including malpractice, negligence, and domestic, and all appeals from administrative bodies.

Prior to his judgeship, Smith served seven years on the Baltimore County Council, and chaired the council for two years.

    Dear Mr. Smith,

I have given the elected school board controversy some thought and I find Bobby Zirkin’s distribution online a letter to which threatens to bypass the will of the group very disturbing. The best way to go is to codify a public vetting system and then interview publicly all candidates. An elected BOE would bring about the organizing efforts of TABCO which could be highly effective considering the light turnout of voters expected for cast ballots for BOE. Second, and even more threatening would be the evangelicals, the Christian right, or any undesirable group and too, that organization from Pennsylvania that defeated Vernon Boozer in a primary election for Andy Harris. Thanks for your clear thinking,

    Ed Veit
