WASHINGTON — An environmental advocacy organization says the Baltimore-Washington area is among the smoggiest in the country.
Environment America said in a report released Wednesday that the top five smoggiest areas are all in California. Washington and Baltimore tied for sixth place.
Baltimore and Washington each had 33 days in 2010 in which ozone — the main component of smog — exceeded the current federal standard at at least one monitoring station over eight hours.
The Riverside-San Bernardino, Calif., area topped the rankings with 110 days. Delaware’s Wilmington-Newark area ranked 15th with 18 days that exceeded smog standards.
Environment America is calling for toughening standards for ozone. The Obama administration recently decided against increasing the standards, following complaints the move would hurt the economy.
