Frederick asks Md. for $1M toward downtown hotel

FREDERICK — The city of Frederick is asking the state to chip in a million dollars toward a proposed downtown hotel and conference center.

A City Hall spokesman told The Frederick News-Post on Thursday that the state money would help pay for property acquisition and architectural and engineering work.

Josh Russin says the city envisions a 200-room hotel with up to 20,000 square feet of meeting space. He estimates it will cost $45 million in private and public funds to complete the project by the end of 2014.

A downtown hotel and conference center was a key part of Republican Mayor Randy McClement’s 2009 election campaign.

The city says the project would have a direct economic impact of $30 million a year, and an indirect impact of $60 million a year.
