United Therapeutics Corp., of Silver Spring, a developer of drugs to treat cardiovascular, infectious and oncological diseases, reported fourth-quarter net income surged to $43.2 million, or 77 cents per diluted share, versus $9.5 million, or 15 cents per diluted share, for the previous-year period.
Revenue totaled $195.2 million in the 2011 quarter versus $163.7 million in the 2010 period.
The company attributed the growth in revenue primarily to the continued increase in the number of patients who are being prescribed its products.
Expenses for research and development, and general and administrative costs, both dropped significantly during the 2011 quarter.
