BWI passenger traffic sets record in 2011

The number of airline passengers who flew through Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport in 2011 increased by 2.1 percent to set a new record, Gov. Martin O’Malley announced Wednesday.
Last year, annual passenger traffic totaled nearly 22.4 million commercial passengers, compared to 2010’s then-record 21.9 million passengers. July 2011 was the airport’s most-traveled month, with 2.2 million passengers.
Southwest Airlines, the top carrier at BWI Marshall with a 56 percent market share, flew more than 12.5 million passengers in and out of BWI Marshall in 2011, a 7 percent increase over 2010.
Cargo shipments also rose during the year, reaching 237.6 million pounds, a 5.3 percent increase over the prior year.
