Movers & Shakers, 2/21: Smith named director of governmental relations at McDaniel College, has book published

Herbert C. Smith

Herbert C. Smith has been named director of government relations at McDaniel College, where he is a political science professor and director of the Survey Research Center. He also co-wrote “Maryland Politics and Government: Democratic Dominance,” which was published Jan. 1. Smith has taught at McDaniel since 1973, and served as chair of the political science and international studies department from 1998 to 2002. He was an instructor at Essex Community College from 1969 to 1972. Smith has written political analysis and commentary published by The Baltimore Sun and other news outlets, and appears as a political commentator on Maryland Public Television, WBAL-TV, and WMAR-TV. He is a regular contributor to “Midday” hosted by Dan Rodricks on WYPR-FM. He first worked on political campaigns in 1971 for Baltimore Mayor William Donald Schaefer. In 1985, Smith was appointed to the Baltimore City Board of Elections. He was appointed to the Maryland Sports Fisheries Advisory Commission in 2009. Smith has master’s and doctoral degrees from Johns Hopkins University.

Accounting

KatzAbosch, of Timonium, has promoted three of the firm’s managers, Andrew L. Bareham, Kristin N. Hucht and Josh A. Sutherland, to principal. All three are CPAs.

Architecture

Marshall Craft Associates, of Baltimore, has promoted Merrill A. Messick III and Peter J. Schwab to principal. Messick, who has 25 years of experience, manages public-sector projects for the firm. Schwab has 30 years of experience, including with large-scale academic and allied health services facilities.

Awards

Rebecca Tingle, executive director of the Anne Arundel County Court Appointed Special Advocate program, was named a Paul Harris Fellow by the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International. Tingle previously received the Annapolis Rotaract Club’s Commitment Award. She has been the county CASA’s executive director for the past six years. She is a member of the Community Foundation for Anne Arundel County’s Leader’s Circle, and received the Incredible Award from Next Gen of Anne Arundel County. Tingle has been a family services caseworker for the Anne Arundel County Department of Social Services and child and adolescent services coordinator at Unity Health System/Behavior Health in Primary Care.

Health Care

Tom Gronert has been named director of information technology services for St. Joseph Medical Center, of Towson. He was also recently named director of the Clinical IT, OneCare Initiative at the medical center, and will continue in that capacity. Previously he served as an IT applications manager. Gronert has been with the medical center and Catholic Health Initiatives for 32 years. He has also worked in the laboratory as a pathology assistant and then as a lab manager.

Restaurants

Tom Fricke has joined HMSHost, of Bethesda, as president and CEO. He most recently was CEO of Cartridge World, and has worked for PepsiCo, Home Depot and Giant Eagle grocery stores. Fricke is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy; upon graduation, he served as an intelligence officer. Locally, HMSHost operates restaurants and retail stores at Washington’s Dulles International and National Airports, at Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport, and in the Maryland and Chesapeake travel plazas along I-95. The company also runs restaurants in the food courts of Arundel Mills mall and the Leesburg Premium Outlets.
