HAGERSTOWN — The city of Hagerstown has installed its first speed-enforcement camera near an elementary school.

The camera was put up on Tuesday on Northern Avenue at Crofton Road near the Fountaindale Elementary School.

Police Capt. Mark Holtzman tells the Herald-Mail of Hagerstown newspaper that a 30-day warning period began on Tuesday. After that, motorists who drive 12 or more miles over the speed limit will be fined $40. The speed limit in that area is 25 mph.

Officials say more speed cameras are expected to be installed in three to five additional areas in the coming weeks.

The cameras will be in effect Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.
