WESTMINSTER — A proposal to make English the official language of Carroll County is headed for a vote after a public hearing.

The Carroll County Times reports that the proposal drew more jeers than applause at a public hearing Tuesday. Most of the approximately 50 people who spoke at the meeting were against it.

The commissioners could vote by the end of month on the proposal. If approved, Carroll would join Frederick and Queen Anne’s counties in adopting similar policies.

Proponents say the measure would send a message that illegal immigrants aren’t welcome in the county. Opponents say it’s an unnecessary law that would make even legal immigrants feel unwelcome.
