Lower-cost stadium plan pitched in Hagerstown

HAGERSTOWN — The minor league Hagerstown Suns are pitching a cheaper alternative to a downtown stadium plan that got trashed by city voters.

The Herald-Mail of Hagerstown reports that Suns majority owner Bruce Quinn outlined plans on Tuesday for a stadium costing $21 million to $22 million. That’s about $15 million less than before. And it would still depend on the state funding about one-third of the cost.

Quinn isn’t insisting on a downtown location. But he says it can’t be built on the site of 82-year-old Municipal Stadium, the team’s current home.

Former Mayor Robert Bruchey was defeated in November after pushing the downtown project.

New Mayor David Gysberts says he aims to keep the Suns in town.

The Suns are a Class A affiliate of the Washington Nationals.
