ANNAPOLIS — County officials in Maryland are calling on the state to raise more money for road and transit projects, with a hike in the state’s gas tax among the sources they say should be considered.

Prince George’s County Executive Rushern Baker urged lawmakers at a hearing Wednesday not to “kick the can down the road” and delay any longer. Montgomery County Executive Ike Leggett says the one of the greatest failures of the last General Assembly session was the inability of state lawmakers to pass any of the many proposed tax hikes that would have generated revenue for the state’s transportation trust fund.

Howard County Executive Ken Ulman and Charles County Board of Commissioners President Candice Quinn Kelly also attended the meeting in Annapolis attended by more than 100.
