Simon named editor of The Daily Record

David B. Simon, an award-winning editor with experience at several Maryland newspapers, has been named editor of The Daily Record, Publisher Suzanne E. Fischer-Huettner announced Thursday.

Simon, 36, will begin his new post on Jan. 14, succeeding Tom Linthicum, who retired in December after more than six years as The Daily Record’s vice president and executive editor.

In his career as a writer and editor, Simon has gained experience in fields as varied as textbook editing, county government reporting and teaching at the post-secondary level.

“David Simon is an outstanding journalist who will lead The Daily Record in print and online,” Fischer-Huettner said. “David will continue to uphold our high standards of editorial excellence, and I know he will lead the team by building for the future, strengthening our current products and introducing new ones. I am pleased and excited that he is coming on board to take on the top editorial job at The Daily Record.”

Simon comes to The Daily Record from the University of Chicago, where he has been working as a senior writer in medicine and biological sciences for the university’s fundraising arm. Until last June, he was managing editor for news and opinion at The Gazette in Gaithersburg, a weekly community newspaper owned by Post-Newsweek Media, where he managed a newsroom of about 30 editorial staff members.

During his tenure, The Gazette won a first-place award as Newspaper of the Year in 2011 in the annual contest run by Suburban Newspapers of America.

At The Gazette, Simon said, he conducted more than 100 interviews with candidates for every level of office, municipal, county and state. That experience, he said, gives him a good overview of the many facets of the different communities that make up Maryland.

“It was a nice window into how different parts of the state view the legislative process,” he said.

Simon was assistant city editor for the Frederick News-Post from 2005 to 2008, following two years as assistant city editor for the Carroll County Times, in Westminster. He began his reporting career in 2002 with the Queens Chronicle, a 70,000-circulation weekly in Queens, N.Y.

Simon has taught reporting and editing as an adjunct professor at American University in Washington, D.C., and Hood College in Frederick. He holds a master of science in journalism from Columbia University and a bachelor of arts cum laude in English Literature from the State University of New York at Albany.

Simon and his wife, Andrea Blair-Simon, have a daughter, Laila, who is about to turn 2.

He paid tribute to The Daily Record’s outgoing editor, Linthicum, whom he first met several years ago at an American Press Institute seminar.

“I’m stepping into a position where a culture of excellence has been nurtured and sustained by my predecessor,” he said.

The Daily Record, which celebrates its 125th anniversary this year, is a Baltimore-based daily newspaper covering Maryland business and legal affairs in print and on the web. It is owned by The Dolan Company, which is based in Minneapolis.
