WASHINGTON — Transit officials that run Washington’s train and bus system have are proposing to use 78 acres they own in Greenbelt to bolster efforts to have a new FBI headquarters built in Prince George’s County.

The Washington Post reports the real estate committee of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority is expected to vote Thursday on the proposal. Making the land available to the FBI could give the county an edge in competition to attract the law enforcement agency. Metro currently has more than 3,700 parking spaces and 17 bus bays on the land. The proposal would allow the site to be considered by the FBI.

The FBI is looking for a new space for its headquarters because its current location in downtown Washington no longer serves the agency’s needs.
