The Navy hospital ship USNS Comfort has left Baltimore, heading to its new home in Norfolk, Va.

The ship, easily recognizable because of the large red crosses on its bow, bridge and elsewhere, had been a landmark along the Baltimore waterfront for more than two decades. Deployments for the ship while in Baltimore included the Persian Gulf and New York following the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.

The Comfort provides medical and surgical care for deployed forces, as well as hospital services for disaster relief. Jessica Alexander of the Navy Military Sealift Command told WBAL-AM that the Comfort left dock about 7 a.m. Tuesday for three days of sea trial before heading to Norfolk.
