Md. officials brace for possible power outages

Maryland Emergency Management Agency officials say their biggest concern is the possibility of power outages caused by the winter storm moving into the region.

Agency spokesman Ed McDonough says no major incidents were reported as of Wednesday morning. There were about 600 power outages statewide as the conditions were worsening in parts of Maryland.

Areas from Interstate-95 to the north and west have been seeing snow since about 3 a.m. Areas from Baltimore and Washington to the south and east have been seeing a wintry mix of precipitation.

McDonough says the wet, heavy snow falling causes concern that it could bring down trees and power lines. He says the agency is prepared to work with local emergency crews and the Red Cross to move people to warm shelters if needed.
