Frederick elections head quits weeks before vote

FREDERICK — The president of the Frederick city elections board is resigning less two months before the first city-run primary.

The Frederick News-Post reported Wednesday that Bob Bennett quit last week. The mayoral primary is set for Sept. 10.

Bennett declined to comment on the reasons for his resignation. He had served for more than four years.

Mayor Randy McClement says Bennett told him he had some minor differences with another board member.

The city is preparing for the first time to run its own elections. They previously were run by the Frederick County Board of Elections.

County officials told the city after the 2009 elections that it would no longer run the city’s balloting. That’s because the city’s election cycle does not coincide with county, state and national elections.
