CUMBERLAND — A Cumberland-based producer of dietary fiber has a new owner after resolving a pollution dispute with the state.
The Cumberland Times-News reported Thursday that Fibred and its wastewater treatment facility Mexico Farms LLC have been purchased by International Fiber Corp. of North Tonawanda, N.Y. The acquisition adds soybean fiber to the company’s family of insoluble fiber products.
International Fiber says it will upgrade the Mexico Farms wastewater treatment system that was the subject of a Maryland Department of the Environment complaint.
State regulators said in 2010 that Mexico Farms failed to meet environmental standards for treated wastewater it sprayed on nearby fields and discharged into the Potomac River.
An agreement reached in July requires up to $9.5 million worth of system upgrades by March 2015.
