The National Nuclear Security Administration says a helicopter will fly over Baltimore to measure naturally occurring background radiation.
The NNSA says the twin-engine Bell 412 helicopter may be seen flying at low altitudes Wednesday and Thursday. It will be equipped with radiation sensing technology and can fly at speeds of up to 80 mph.
The flyovers are a part of a research project sponsored by the Department of Homeland Security’s Domestic Nuclear Detection Office. The background data will be used by to improve aerial radiation measurement capabilities.
