Top court revisits ‘knowing and voluntary’ requirement

Defense attorneys and prosecutors battled Thursday at the Maryland Court of Appeals over how much detail judges must provide to comply with a high court decision that they state on the record that a defendant’s waiver of the constitutional right to a jury trial was knowing and voluntary, lest a guilty verdict be overturned.
