As it happens, the average attention span of a goldfish is a full second longer than the steadily decreasing 8-second average attention span of a person in 2013, according to StatisticBrain.com.

Further, 17 percent of Internet page views last less than 4 seconds, while only 4 percent last longer than 10 minutes.

What is our point, you ask, if you are one of the few still reading?

GoldfishPeople have short attention spans, so when marketing your business, it is crucial to get things right the first time and to get your message across as quickly as possible. Here are some way to achieve this:

Make your message clear and concise. Although you might hope people will spend hours exploring your website inside and out, realistically, they probably will not. It is important to get your message across in the simplest way possible.

Use imagery. According to StatisticBrain.com, an average of only 28 percent of words are actually read on a 593-word webpage, so photos and other images are your best bet when it comes to getting your message across quickly.

Exclude unnecessary information. Part of achieving clarity in your message is eliminating any distractors. Stick to what you want to get across to your viewers/readers. If it does not play a role in your message, you do not need it.

As people’s attention spans continue to decrease, businesses have to find more creative and attractive ways to market themselves. Marketing professionals must conform to the times and continually refine their techniques to achieve effective messages.
