Top court eases up on ‘knowing, voluntary’ recitation

Maryland’s top court has eased the burden it placed on trial judges when it ruled last year that any conviction following a bench trial will be overturned if the judge fails to state on the record that the defendant’s waiver of the constitutional right to a jury was knowing and voluntary.
