The great Adam Carolla has a theory that the craziest stuff happens in either Germany or Florida. He even plays a game, called “Germany or Florida?”, where stories are scrubbed of specific location details and he and his guests have to guess where the story happened.
So, in today’s “Germany or Florida?”: Court deputies had to break up a physical fight between a judge and a lawyer after an argument during a hearing on Monday.
The dateline for this story is… Brevard County, Fla., where Judge John Murphy allegedly punched a public defender after he pressured the lawyer to get his client to waive his right to a speedy trial.
“You know, if I had a rock I would throw it at you right now,” Murphy told Andrew Weinstock, according to the video of the hearing. “Stop pissing me off. Just sit down.”
Murphy then allegedly asked the lawyer to join him in a hallway where there were no cameras.
“If you want to fight, let’s go out back and I’ll just beat your ass,” Murphy tells Weinstock before the two head out of the courtroom.
Here’s my favorite part of the story:
While Murphy and Weinstock could not be seen, the courtroom camera captured audio of the scuffle and several loud thuds that accompanied it. Those inside the courtroom sat uncomfortably and then clapped when the altercation sounded as if it ended.
Sheriff’s deputies broke up the fight, Weinstock had his matters moved to another courtroom and Murphy continued with his docket.
I feel very, very, very sorry for whoever was following Weinstock.
