Explaining where Baltimore is located to Chinese investors can be a little challenging.
Lewis Laskin, overseas marketing director of Oriental Dolphins, is trying to draw investment from China to Baltimore using the EB-5 law. Essentially the law uses the promise of a green card to lure between $500,000 and $1 million in individual investment in American projects that create at least 10 jobs.
Laskin’s company was the first to successfully do that in Charm City when it financed the purchase of the Mount Vernon Hotel. But when Laskin mentions Baltimore, many of his clients have no idea where their money is going.
“If you say to an investor the project is in Baltimore, they say ‘Where?’ If you say the project is in Maryland, they say ‘Where?’ We say, ‘Well it’s 30 minutes from Washington, D.C..’ [They say] ‘Oh, OK,'” Laskin said with a laugh.
For Laskin’s sake, lets just hopes he spreads the word before “The Wire” defines the city for Beijing investors.
