State gives $1M grant to Washington County

A Hagerstown manufacturer just found the golden ticket.

The Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development approved a $1 million conditional grant to Washington County to help Hagerstown-based National Golden Tissue expand.

National Golden Tissue, which manufactures paper towels, napkins and bath and facial tissue, plans to more than double its workforce by adding 100 new jobs. The company plans to renovate the former Boat USA building in Hagerstown, which it recently acquired.

The grant is actually federal money but was made through the state’s Community Development Block Grant Program, which administers federal dollars through DBED and the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development.

The program is overseen by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

The Washington County Board of County Commissioners has also approved a conditional loan of $300,000 to National Golden Tissue, and the Tri-County Council for Western Maryland has approved a $400,000 loan.
