The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has signed a new, five-year memorandum of understanding with the U.S. Coast Guard Yard for ship services at Curtis Bay, Maryland Sen. Barbara A. Mikulski announced on Tuesday. NOAA’s Atlantic Fleet of science vessels will use Curtis Bay for ship maintenance and repair services. NOAA’s Atlantic Fleet is comprised of nine ships along the East Coast and in the Gulf of Mexico, which conduct hydrographic mapping, oceanographic research and fishery surveys. NOAA tentatively plans to send at least one ship per year to the yard with the U.S. Coast Guard being reimbursed on a time-and-materials basis. NOAA could still use private businesses for service when those options cost less.
