Baltimore City Public Schools
In just her fourth year of teaching, Melissa Garcia already has earned a reputation within Baltimore City Public Schools as a respected educator.
She has embraced leadership inside and outside of the classroom.
She is a science, technology, engineering and mathematics leadership teacher at Barclay Elementary/Middle School and works in partnership with Johns Hopkins University to encourage students’ interest in STEM fields.
“I believe that my actions today — in and outside of the classroom — will positively impact society at large in the future because I believe I am introducing more engineers of color to society,” she said.
Outside of the classroom, she is part of the Maryland Zoo’s education advisory board, and she recently was approved to launch the first Baltimore city chapter of Girls on the Run at her school .
Garcia, who got her start with Teach for America, said the organization promotes health eating, positive attitudes and an active lifestyle for elementary and middle-school girls.
