Thomas S. Pilkerton III
His children are not yet in first grade, but lawyer Thomas S. Pilkerton III has long been volunteering to support schools he believes in.
His pro bono work includes working with officials in Baltimore city and an alliance of charter school advocates to renegotiate the city’s contract that allows publicly funded charter schools to operate outside many strictures of the public school system.
For that effort and work on behalf of City Neighbors Charter School and the SEED School of Maryland, a college preparatory boarding school in Baltimore that enrolls at-risk students, Pilkerton earned two National Pro Bono awards from DLA Piper, the law firm where he has worked since 2007.
Last year Pilkerton was made a partner at the firm, where his practice concentrates on mergers and acquisitions, raising capital and work as outside counsel for companies in the United States and abroad.
While he’s now handling complex global transactions, Pilkerton still remembers the first deal he saw from start to finish.
“It was not the largest purchase price … or most complicated deal that I have worked on at DLA Piper, but it was the first time where I was wholly responsible for every aspect of the transaction …,” he recalls.
Pilkerton, who grew up in Leonardtown, credits his small-town upbringing for his “diligent work ethic, commitment to helping others and belief that opportunities do not just happen but must be created.”
