UM Carey announces 2018 alumni honors

The University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law has announced this year’s recipients of the Alumni Honors Awards. John Frisch, chairman emeritus of Miles & Stockbridge P.C.; Sharon Krevor-Weisbaum, managing partner at Brown Goldstein & Levy LLP in Baltimore; Baltimore City Circuit Judge Barry G. Williams and Michelle N. Mendez, managing attorney at the Catholic Legal Immigration Network Inc.

John_Frisch.jpgFrisch, who graduated UM Carey in 1983, is the winner of the 2018 Distinguished Graduate Award, which honors a UM Carey Law alumnus/a who is prominent in the community through professional excellence and service. Frisch was the longest-serving leader of Miles & Stockbridge with 15 years as chairman and CEO. He stepped down in February.

Krevor-Weisbaum, who graduated in 1987, is the winner of the 2018 Benjamin L. Cardin Public ServiceSharon_weisbaum.jpg Award, which is presented to an alumnus/a for contributions in public service in the law. Krevor-Weisbaum has been a longtime advocate for people with disabilities and their families, as well as barriers in education, high-stakes testing, employment, housing, and accessing state and federal services for those individuals.

WilliamBarry_Williams.jpgs, who also graduated in 1987, is receiving the Mary Ellen Barbera ’84 Judicial Excellence Award, which is given to an alumnus/a for judicial excellence. Appointed to the bench in 2005, Williams has been on the national stage through his work in the Baltimore judiciary as he presided over the cases against the six police officers charged in connection to Freddie Gray’s death.

Mendez, who graduated in 2008, will receive the Rising Star Award, which recognizes a recent graduate for contributions of service and leadership. Mendez’s legal career focuses on serving immigrants. The award recipients are selected by the Alumni Board Awards Committee and confirmed by the Alumni Board. Winners will be honored at the Alumni Honors Banquet as part of Alumni Weekend 2018 in April.
