Clothes (unfortunately) don’t make this woman

By: Lila Shapiro-Cyr

I really liked Allie’s posts (here, here and here) on how “Clothes make the Woman” – they had some terrific tips on clothes buying, clothes wearing, and just style in general. Unfortunately, my clothes buying opportunities are limited to 30 minute trips to Ann Taylor about once a month during the work week.

My weekends (during which I am now becoming accustomed to my new job as my son’s chauffeur), unfortunately, don’t have the 2-3 hours that I would need to get to the mall to do the much-needed wardrobe overhaul. Truth is, I’m lucky if I get out of the house in the morning without being covered in crayon and dog hair (so perhaps, it’s better that I don’t have stylish clothes!).

I aspire to wear the stylish outfits Allie describes.  But while I’m in the process of telling my five year-old for the fifth time that he has to brush his teeth, make his bed, get his school bag together and get on his shoes and making sure that the two year-old is diapered and dressed, it’s a miracle if I can put on a skirt instead of a pair of pants. The pants, shell, cardigan thing is just way too easy. And it can be put together in the 5 minutes I have in the morning to pick out an outfit. The skirt outfit is far too complicated.  Particularly since many moons ago I decided that I’d never wear a pair of hose again.

Ironically, the clothes-issue came to a head for me earlier this week, as I realized that I didn’t have enough properly-fitting suits for my upcoming multi-day New York closing.  So I hit the internet. I ordered a suit.  From Ann Taylor. I saved a whole 20 minutes, I think, from not having to walk across the street.  My hope of all hopes is that they’ll get here in time for me to get them shortened (because I’ve never met a pair of pants that were the right length). Now, I will just be on a mad search, in 30 minute increments, to find shirts for the suits. Suggestions Allie?

Other than the few select nice work clothes I need, it’s probably best that I treat my apparel like I treat my couch — best not to buy a new one until I know I won’t be trying to get crayon and chocolate milk off of it.

You should definitely take advantage of the complementary personal shoppers at stores like Nordstrom and Jcrew. You can make an appointment, tell them what you need and they will have everything coordinated for you when you arrive. Then all you have to do is try it on. I think both stores also offer complementary basic alterations.

isolde–I’m wearing a lightly-striped chocolate brown button-up shirt with…wait, now that I think about it, that’s a really awkward question. I’m going back to work now…
