A blog for young lawyers

The beach and the Bar Association (and The Daily Record Happy Hour)

For many, Memorial Day usually marks the unofficial start of summer.  For me, my neighborhood pool is open, my air conditioner is blowing freon-cooled air throughout my home, and I continue to think to myself, “It’s not the heat, but it’s the humidity.”

In the last week, I have dealt with a number of summer-related ailments, including poison ivy, sunburn, two mosquito bites and a possible mild case of heat stroke (which required me to stop weeding the poison ivy and go into my air conditioned home). This Wednesday, however, will mark my unofficial start of the summer — The Maryland State Bar Association Annual Meeting.

From June 9-12, hundreds of lawyers will converge on the Clarion Hotel in Ocean City for four days of meetings, educational classes, networking, and social events. For a young lawyer, it is a great way to meet other attorneys and judges in an informal setting. For those of you who have not participated, here are a couple of don’t-miss events:

1.  The MSBA Young Lawyers Section and the The Daily Record’s Happy Hour at Liquid Assets from 5:30-8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 9.  Join young lawyers throughout the state for free food and drinks (and door prizes).

2.  The President’s Reception on Thursday, June 10 from 7:00-9:00 p.m. is the biggest event of the conference. MSBA President Thomas C. Cardaro and President-Elect Thomas D. Murphy host the attendees and guests with dinner and drinks at the Clarion.

3.  YLS Sun Run at 7:30 a.m. on Friday, June 11. At the annual event open to everyone, run a 5K or 10K through Ocean City. You can register at this free event and join other runners on a scenic run on the bayside of O.C.

4. MSBA Annual Business Meeting on June 12 at 8:30 a.m. Join other MSBA members for the Installation of Thomas D. Murphy as President of the MSBA for 2010-2011.

These events are only a small sampling of the activities scheduled for the Annual Meeting.  There are a variety of educational programs, with topics ranging from construction law to bankruptcy to social networking. Make the MSBA Annual Meeting your unofficial start to the summer.
