Don’t always have lunch at your desk

By:

John Cord’s lunch-at-your-desk proposition is an important one to embrace. As he says, the most efficient way to have lunch during the workday is to make it at home and eat it at your desk. Although I like a good PB&J on occasion, I myself like to make a big pot of soup or chili on Sunday and bring it to lunch three to four days a week. It’s beyond easy, healthy and inexpensive.

That said, you’ve got to leave your desk for lunch sometimes. And not just so you can stretch your legs.

You need to meet up with law school classmates, attend a lunch event, take a client or potential client out or just break bread with your colleagues.

At some point (sooner or later) there will be pressure on you to generate business, and this will never happen having lunch in your office everyday. Your law school classmates are going to have client conflicts and they might very well refer business to you — IF they’ve seen you some time in the last five years.

Workday networking events are filled with potential clients. And the importance of spending time with work friends and collegues can’t be understated.

I sometimes just go get a salad with one of my closest friends here at work. Although we often end up eating it at our desk, it give us a little bit of non-desk time to spend together. Sometimes we talk about our kids and life outside work, but sometimes we generate some good marketing ideas. That time with work folks can’t be underestimated. I wish that I had more of it.

So, be efficient. Eat lunch at your desk a lot. But also make sure to get out of the office every once in a while.  Besides, it’s a pretty good time of year to go outside and enjoy the weather.
