Mark R. Cissell, CPA
President & CEO
Mark R. Cissell takes pride in having a different leadership style than what accountants find at many CPA firms.
“I see my role as a leader in the organization as the person who determines where the group is going but not necessarily how it will get there,” said Cissell, president and CEO since 2009 at KatzAbosch in Timonium. “I encourage employees to innovate, experiment, and take calculated risks to improve the firm’s and their own performance. More importantly, I have the responsibility to inspire and guide our next generation of leaders by ensuring our firm’s vision is aligned internally and externally.”
The firm has almost 90 employees and revenue has increased 15 percent during his tenure, said Cissell, who sits on the dean’s advisory board for the University of Maryland Merrick School of Business.
KatzAbosch created a full-time business development position almost five years ago, and its client base has seen steady growth since, Cissell said. “Most people in our profession agree CPAs can ‘close’ business but struggle with generating leads, so we took a cue from our business clients.”
Cissell, who started as a senior accountant with KatzAbosch in 1985, is looking to the future of his CPA firm. “Many initiatives have been developed to foster our culture and ensure the succession of the firm well after my tenure,” he said. “Having a clear, concise, and purposeful vision, created by listening to employees at all levels, enables us to grow the organization even during challenging times.”
