Curcio honored by alma mater

Tom Curcio, president and CEO of the Baltimore-based Board of Child Care of the United Methodist Church, Inc., has received the Distinguished Alumni Award from Gannon University’s College of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences.

The award was presented Oct. 19 at a dinner on campus attended by 300 guests during the Alumni Homecoming Reunion Weekend in Erie, Pa. More than 50 of Curcio’s Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity brothers attended, traveling from as far as California and Texas.

Curcio, an Ellicott City resident, graduated from Gannon University in 1967 with a bachelor’s degree in sociology. He holds a master’s in criminal justice from Long Island University and a master’s in social work from Hunter College, School of Social Work.

Curcio has spent 45 years in the field of child welfare, focusing primarily on residential, out-of-home care. Since 1983, he has led the Board of Child Care, an agency based in Baltimore County that serves more than 3,000 youth and families. When he arrived at the organization nearly 30 years ago, the agency served 50 youth and had an annual budget of $3 million. Over the years he has overseen the renovation of the Baltimore campus and completion of a campus in Falling Water, West Va., plus the development of day care centers in Baltimore and Washington, D.C.

Curcio, a 2004 graduate of Leadership Maryland, is active in the community. He is a member of the Provider Council for the State of Maryland and a board member of the Domestic Violence Center of Howard County and the Cool Kids Campaign. Over the years he has served on the board of directors of the Alliance for Children and Families and on the board of the Maryland Association for Youth and Families in addition to being president of the board of the United Methodist Association’s Children, Youth and Families.

During his leadership, the Board of Child Care has received several honors including Organization of the Year Award and Best Practice Award for Innovative Programming from the United Methodist Association. In 2009, Mr. Curcio was named Administrator of the Year by the same association. A year prior, he received the Samuel Gerson Nordlinger Child Welfare Leadership Award from the Alliance for Children and Families. Recently he was recognized by Dream 4 It Inc., for his work with special needs youth.
