Maryland Attorney General Douglas F. Gansler on Wednesday announced a settlement totaling $42.9 million between drug maker Pfizer Inc. and 33 states, including Maryland.

Four large Baltimore law firms will help fund a summer-associate program at the Maryland attorney general’s office in which students from the city’s two law schools will be selected based on the strength of essays addressing how they have overcome an economic or social disadvantage.

Maryland’s chief legal officer and its chief public defender are awaiting word from the U.S. Supreme Court on whether it will keep allowing the state’s police to collect DNA samples from people arrested for violent crimes, despite a Maryland high court ruling that bars the collections except when absolutely necessary to identify the arrestee.
