As part of Sail Baltimore’s World Navy Salute 2010, the HMS Sutherland, a Duke Class Frigate of the Royal Navy, docked at the Broadway Pier in Fells Point on Tuesday. The Sutherland’s visit coincides with the Bicentennial of the War of 1812 celebrations. Re-enactors dressed as British Royal Marines in 1812 period clothing and a bagpiper were on hand for the celebration. Fort McHenry, which was besieged by the Royal Navy during the war and immortalized in Francis Scott Key’s poem ‘Star Spangled Banner,’ planned an amicable ‘salute’ of cannon fire with the Sutherland as it entered the harbor.
