Blue crab crisis on watermen’s agenda (access required)

<br /><br />A year ago, Maryland watermen were saying the Chesapeake Bay’s blue crab population looked plentiful and healthy. Their chief concern was their own economic health.<br /><br />That has all changed after a scarce crab catch this summer — perhaps the lowest for Maryland watermen since the state started keeping records a decade ago. The September blue crab catch in Maryland was about 2.2 million pounds, about a third of the usual take.
