FDA, NIH to team on getting research to market

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the National Institutes of Health announced a joint initiative Wednesday to safely speed up the approval process for new drugs being brought to market.

The federal agencies will establish a joint Leadership Council to spearhead collaborative work on important public health issues. The council will work to ensure that regulatory considerations form an integral component of biomedical research planning.

Also, the Silver Spring-based FDA and the NIH, based in Bethesda, said they will make $6.75 million available over three years for research into ways to improve evaluation of safety and effectiveness of new medical products either in development or on the market.
