Music to Baltimore’s ears

Baltimore and its music scene got some major radio airplay this week.

“Sound Opinions,” hosted by well-known rock critics Jim DeRogatis and Greg Kot and broadcast by WBEZ Chicago, featured Baltimore along with Memphis, Tenn., and Portland, Ore., on its “Summer Road Trip” show spotlighting the rock, hip-hop and experimental sounds emanating from three U.S. cities.

You can listen to the show here. The Baltimore segment comes first, about five minutes in.

Baltimore Sun entertainment writer Sam Sessa served as tour guide for Kot and DeRogatis, talking up local acts like Dan Deacon, J. Roddy Walston and the Business and Darkroom Productions.

Sessa also assessed what makes Charm City such fertile musical ground. Among the reasons are relatively cheap rents and performance spaces that attract creative types.

The segment with Sessa also gave the show’s hosts a nice peg for a piece of entertainment news: Their nationally syndicated show now airs on WTMD 89.7 on Sundays at 10 p.m.
