Cardiologist sues St. Joseph Medical Center over stent allegations

A former St. Joseph Medical Center cardiologist accused of unnecessarily implanting stents in hundreds of patients filed a $60 million lawsuit against the hospital Thursday.

Dr. Mark G. Midei alleges that St. Joseph’s has pursued an “epic campaign of corporate deception, trickery and fraud” resulting in his “complete destruction,” according to the lawsuit filed in Baltimore City Circuit Court.

The lawsuit also alleges St. Joseph made Midei “the fall guy” in an attempt to deflect a federal investigation of the hospital into possible Medicare fraud related to its stent surgeries.

St. Joseph suspended Midei in July 2009, and the state’s Board of Physicians met with Midei four months ago to investigate the charges. Midei currently holds his license in good standing.

Midei is seeking damages for fraud, invasion of privacy, interference with economic relations and intentional infliction of emotional distress. He is represented by Stephen L. Snyder of Snyder & Snyder in Pikesville.
